The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. COVID Vaccine– America, we’re showing our ignorance by not getting vaccinated…It is not a government plot and it’s safe, effective and free…We’ve been getting vaccinated all our lives so what’s the trouble now???…Your stubbornness is merely going to make America take it in the health and economic shorts again…Thanks guys!!!

2. Southeastern Conference – Overthrow of US government next goal of noted affiliation of college sports teams after acquisition of Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “pretty sure” putting Nick Saban in charge would result in entire country vaccinated in two weeks.

In the end, he favored us by deigning to take the room, despite the fact there wasn’t a full kitchen and after he left I put it at even money he’d call within five minutes to whine about something and he did, too!!!…I am not making that up…There wasn’t a freezer big enuff to hold the chicken he had brought, nor was there a wine opener…I told him we could keep the chicken for him in a back-office freezer and that we had a wine bottle opener for him.

On This Date
The long march to today.

In 1966 – Charles Whitman, a 25-year-old student at the University of Texas in Austin, goes on a shooting spree from the tower of the university’s Main Building. Whitman arrived on campus about 11:30 and killed three people on his way to the observation deck, from which he began firing about 20 minutes later, killing 13 more and injuring 31. Whitman would be shot and killed by Austin police officers after 96 minutes of shooting. The final death toll of 18 includes Whitman, an unborn child and a victim who died in 2001 from injuries suffered in the attack. The total does not include his mother and his wife, whom he had killed just after midnight.

In  1941 – Lefty Gomez of the New York Yankees establishes a new major league record for most walks in a shutout in a 9-0 victory of the St Louis Browns. Gomez walked eleven batters to break the record of nine established by Gene Packard of the Cincinnati Reds in 1913. Gomez allowed five hits and the Browns left 15 runners on base. The record still stands and is actually one more walk than the extra-inning record of ten.

In 1987 – Bob Seger is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Shakedown. It was the 18th and penultimate Top 40 hit for Seger, his seventh and final top 10 hit and remains his only #1 song. The song also went to #1 in Canada and was Billboard’s ninth-biggest song of the year. The song was from the movie Beverly Hills Cop II and was originally offered to Glen Frey, who came down with laryngitis before the recording session.
