Notes from around the human experience.
HERE WE GO AGAIN: In some ways, Donald Trump is a president like none America has seen: he is a man of zero moral or intellectual substance; he is a convicted felon and an admitted sexual predator. That’s a first for us.
On The Other Hand: In one way, however, Trump is like every president we’ve had since World War II: he completely disregards our Constitution’s mandate that Congress declares war. His unilateral attack on Iran earlier this week shows that.
Dry, Technial Matter: It couldn’t be plainer, with Article I, Section 8, Clause 11 being very clear on the matter:
The Congress shall have Power To…To declare War…
Fly In The Ointment: It doesn’t give Congress the power to pass a resolution authorizing military force, and it doesn’t give the president the power to make war on his own. Nor can Congress abrogate this responsibility to anyone else, like the UN.
Can You Make This Any Plainer For Us, Gaylon?: Congress declares war, dammit! And we don’t think it is unreasonable to conclude that this means a formal declaration from both houses stating that a state of war exists between us and another country. We would submit to you that attacking a sovereign nation like the US did to Iran this week is an act of war.
FunFact: Congress hasn’t declared war all that often over the centuries, only eleven times, the last time in World War II. Every war we’ve fought since then has been illegal: Korean, Vietnam, Afghanistan, every single one!
USA! USA! Now, this does not mean American military elements cannot defend themselves when attacked. Of course, they can. Threats must be eliminated immediately and for good. But the attack of a sovereign nation is an act of war, and war must be declared by Congress.
The Bottom Line: We should be ashamed of ourselves. It’s not the politicians who are to blame for this, but rather you and me – we the people – who are to blame for this because we accept this. Over the past 70 years, we’ve allowed our constitution to become irrelevant, and we are paying the price for it as more and more America is becoming irrelevant both to its citizens and the rest of the world.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow somehow manages to have a slow night at the hospital. Today’s Diary.
Boy, the hospital was swamped tonite…The floor had 17 patients – it has 24 beds – and the ER looked like a MASH unit…There were even constables on hand taking statements…The birth center was doing good business, too, and rumor had it the OR wasn’t shuttered for the nite, either.
Thank God none of this affected Officer Sparrow…

Extra, extra, read all about it.
In 1994 – Members of the Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo release sarin gas in a neighborhood of Matsumoto, Japan, killing eight and injuring over 500. The attacks were designed to attack three judges ruling in a suit against the cult, and to test sarin gas as a mass murder agent. Finding the results satisfactory, the cult carried out an attack on a Tokyo subway nine months later. Thirteen cult members were later tried and convicted in connection with both attacks, and six were executed in 2018.
In 1959 – Mickey Wright becomes the first woman to defend her US Open title, defeating Louise Suggs by two strokes with a final-round 71 at Churchill Valley Country Club near Pittsburgh. It was the second of four US Open titles for Wright and her third of 13 major titles, and was one of five runner-up finishes for Suggs, alongside two titles. Since Wright, six other women have defended their US Open title.
In 1970 – Conway Twitty is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the fourth and final consecutive week with Hello Darlin’. It was the fourth of a then-record 36 #1 country songs for Twitty, a mark now held by George Strait with 44. The song also went #2 country in Canada, peaked at #60 on the Hot 100, and was Billboard’s #1 country song of the year.
