Leading Off
Notes from around the human experience.

OH HELL, HERE WE GO: Legend has it that centuries ago a ruler – perhaps King Solomon – asked an advisor to come up with a phrase applicable in every circumstance. The advisor – perhaps saving his own life in the process – came up with:

This, too, shall pass.

Dry, Technical Matter: Regardless of its source, it remains one of life’s great lessons – its only real lesson, perhaps: things change and there ain’t a whole hell of a lot we can do about it. We recently had a terrifying example of this.

Ladies And Gentlemen, Dry, Technical Matter: Longtime readers of this crap know our fascination with assorted aspects of history. That’s why we include the popular On This Date segment in this beloved feature. Part of that, of course, is chronicling the #1 song on a Billboard chart – usually, but not always, the Hot 100 – on a certain date. Though only a few lines long, each entry is packed with information, including its performance in other countries, how many other hits the act had and so forth.

Now You Know: No small part of that research was conducted on a wonderful website called racpro.com. It had data from every Billboard pop chart since the first in 1940, plus other charts as well.

Live, You Are There Coverage: You click on an act and BOOM you have every song they ever charted. You click on a song and BOOM, you have every week of its chart run. You click on the date and BOOM, there you are, the entire Hot 100 countdown for that week.

FunFact: It even had Cashbox charts, which every chart geek knows ran its own respected charts for years.

Fly In The Ointment: It’s gone now. We went there for a recent column, and an error message has replaced a splendid resource. We have no idea what happened, though at $5 a month, they weren’t charging nearly enough for what they delivered.

The Bottom Line: Those who really groove on On This Date may well notice a difference in the depth of information we can provide. If so, it’s not because we’re slacking; it’s because a source has gone dark. Or you may not notice a difference. We have superior research skills and can generally find what we’re looking for. It simply won’t be as easy now. RIP racpro.com.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow escorts a family to the birth center. Today’s Diary.

He was not happy at all: you could see the terror in his eyes, and his head was tilted to the side, hardly the look of someone expecting a bliss…You could tell he thought his life sentence was just beginning…

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1968 – Apollo 7 – the first manned Apollo mission since the Apollo 1 disaster in February 1967 – launches from Cape Kennedy, Florida. Commanded by Walter Schirra with Donn Eisele and Walter Cunningham, Apollo 1 made 163 orbits in ten days, and while the mission was a technical success, strained communications ensured that each astronaut was making their final voyage into space. Schirra was the first and only astronaut to fly Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions.

In 1906 – Ed Walsh of the Chicago White Sox establishes a new major league record for most strikeouts in a World Series game in a 3-0 win over the Chicago Cubs in game three. Walsh had 12 strikeouts and research into whose record he broke was inconclusive. The record was tied the following year by Bill Donovan, broken in 1929 by Howard Ehmke, and is now held by Bob Gibson who had 17 in 1968. The White Sox would win the series in six games.

In 2014 – Meghan Trainor is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the fourth of eight consecutive weeks with All About That Bass. It was the first of seven Top 40 and four Top 10 hits for Trainor, and remains her only #1 song. Trainor was the 21st female artist in Hot 100 history to have her debut single go to #1. The song also peaked at #1 in Great Britain and was Billboard’s 8th-biggest song of the year.
