Notes from around the human experience.

DONALD TRUMP AND THE MANTLE OF IDIOCY: Good gravy, Donald Trump is sending the Marines into Los Angeles. This is pure Trump: create some chaos and then create a spectacle trying to resolve it because creating spectacles is all he cares about.

Dry, Technical Matter: As we discussed here yesterday, Trump is not governing; he is merely throwing mud on marble walls: nothing he does sticks. Sooner or later, he will lose interest in Los Anglels and move on to something else so he can create another spectacle.

Fly In The Ointment: There is really no reason to call in either the National Guard or the Marines because this isn’t a riot, it’s a protest. Lord knows LA has enough of them over the years, and local constables have a solid working knowledge about how to handle them. Besides, Trump pardoned the Jan 6 insurrectionists for posing a much greater threat to our country.

Live, You Are There Coverage: Some are saying that deploying federal troops on US soil is merely a prelude to Trump becoming a dictator. We don’t think this is true.

Shorthand Me: Trump is a lot of things – ignorant, an egotistical blatherskite, self-absorbed and self-obsessed – but he is not evil. If he were, he never would’ve left the White House in 2020, and we would either be living under a Trump dictatorship or fighting a second civil war right now.

The Bottom Line: No, Trump is merely a man of zero moral or intellectual substance. No one has ever told him no, and he is only happy when he is the center of attention. He is also wealthy and a bully, and people like this have been finding people to tell them what they want to hear and do their bidding since time immemorial. We elected this, and we knew what we were getting ourselves into, too. America – collectively, now as ignorant as its leader – deserves everything she gets.

Three things were plain: one, everything was for the kid…Two, he was just starting out on his fat career…He wasn’t fat yet, merely a tad chubby but, paced by late-night snacking of this sort, he was on the way…Three, the dad was just starting out appeasing him…

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1498 – Michelangelo receives a commission from a French cardinal to carve what would become The Pieta. Michelangelo, then in his early 20’s, would finish the work in less than two years, which shows a dead Jesus Christ lying on Mary’s lap. It is currently housed in St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City and is the only work Michelangelo ever signed, a move he later regarded as an “outburst of pride” and later regretted.

In 1880 – Charley Jones of the Boston Red Caps establishes a new major league record for most home runs in an inning in a 19-3 win over the Buffalo Bisons. Jones had two home runs in the eighth inning, both off Tom Poorman. The mark has been tied 63 times since, most recently by Riley Greene of the Detroit Tigers this past May 2. The Red Caps are now the Atlanta Braves, and the Bisons left the National League after the 1885 season.

In 1989 – The Fine Young Cannibals are at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the second of seven consecutive weeks with The Raw & the Cooked. The album went to #1 in four other countries, including Austria and Great Britain, was Billboard’s 6th-biggest album of 1989, and its 91st-biggest of 1990. The album produced four chart singles, including the #1s She Drives Me Crazy and Good Thing, was the second of three chart albums for the group, and remains their only #1.

Answer To The Last Trivia Questions
Knowledge is power.

The youngest act to hit #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 was Little Stevie Wonder, who was 11 when, as a member of the Jackson 5, I Want You Back went to #1 in 1970.
