In 1957 – The US Supreme Court rules in a 6-2 decision that obscenity is not protected by the 1st Amendment. The ruling upheld the conviction of the plaintiff in the case, Samuel Roth, provided a test to determine what constituted obscenity, which loosened current obscenity laws. Roth was currently serving his final of several sentences for distributing pornographic books and died in 1974.
In 1922 – The National Football League comes into existence when the American Professional Football Association (APFA) renames itself at a league meeting in Cleveland. The AFPA had been formed in 1920 with 14 teams, increased to 21 teams in 1921, and the NFL began with 18 teams with the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers the only teams which remain in the same city. The Chicago Cardinals later moved to St Louis and are now in Phoenix.
In 2017 – Sam Hunt is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart for the 18th of a then-record 34 consecutive weeks with Body Like a Back Road. The song would break the record of 21 weeks that had been done three times previously, and the record is now 50 weeks by Beebe Rexha and Florida-Georgia Line with Meant to Be in 2017-18. The song also peaked at #6 on the Hot 100, was Billboard’s #1 country song of 2017, it’s 46th-biggest of 2018, and its 2nd-biggest of the decade. It was the fourth and most recent #1 country song for Hunt.
