In 1775 – Louis XVI is crowned King of France in a ceremony in Reims Cathedral, about 80 miles northeast of Paris. Louis had ascended the throne the year before, succeeding his grandfather Louis XV and reigned until 1792, when he was deposed and executed the following year. It was the last French coronation until the Bourbon Restoration in 1814 enthroned Louis XVII and Charles X, reigns that also ended in revolution.
In 1919 – Sir Barton becomes the first horse to win the Triple Crown, winning the Belmont Stakes by five lengths over Sweep On. The only other horse in the field, Native Bridge, finished 13 lengths behind the winner. Sir Barton had won the Kentucky Derby on May 11 and the Preakness Stakes on May 14, and on May 24 won the Withers Stakes at Aqueduct in New York City. The term Triple Crown did not come into common usage until 1930.
In 1977 – KC & the Sunshine Band is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with I’m Your Boogie Man. It was the fifth of eleven Top 40 hits for the group, their fourth of eight Top 10 hits, and their fourth of five #1s, the first two totals including KC’s duet with Terri DiSario. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #41 in Great Britain, at #3 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was Billboard’s 11th-biggest song of the year.
