USA! USA!: The United States Senate waved the white flag on Wednesday, surrendering to President Donald Trump by voting down a resolution that would’ve halted US military action in Iran without further Congressional approval. (The House followed suit on Thursday.)

Stop Us If You’ve Heard This Before: It would’ve been funny if it wasn’t so humiliating: Congress willingly abrogating a power issued to them in the Constitution: Congress declares war. Not the president, not the UN, not your aunt in Duluth. Congress.

Fly In The Ointment: By even considering a resolution of this sort, Congress embarrassed itself and reinforced what has been apparent for a while now: that Congress, along with the media and the American electorate, prefers to appease Donald Trump rather than tell him no.

Get Out Your History Books: Why we appeased this man will be a mystery to future generations. His lies, nonsense, and witless blather should’ve been dismissed five minutes after he declared for the GOP nomination in 2015. It wasn’t, though. It was treated as real news and policy suggestions, and Trump was escorted straight to the primaries, the nomination, and to the White House.

FunFact: We’ve chosen to appease a witless blatherskite, someone accustomed to bullying and overpowering his way to what he wants. We elected idiocy, and we are being governed accordingly.

The Bottom Line: We deserve better than this. We deserve a government that abides by the Constitution: a president who respects Congress’s power to declare war and a Congress that jealously guards it. We don’t have that now, and frankly, we haven’t had it since World War II, the last time Congress declared war. You and me – we the people – deserve better, but we are not going to get better until we start demanding it on Election Day.

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1857 – The US Supreme Court rules in Dred Scott v. Sanford that the Constitution does not grant citizenship to Blacks. Scott was a slave whose owner had taken him into free states and territories, and when he was returned to Missiouri he sued for his freedom on the grounds that he had been freed when in free territory. The ruling upheld both federal and state court rulings and was later overturned by 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the Constitution.

In 1982 – The San Antonio Spurs and the Milwaukee Bucks establish a new NBA record for most points in a game in a 171-166 Spurs victory in three overtimes. The 337 points broke the record of 316 set in March 1962, in a 169-147 Philadelphia Warriors win over the New York Knicks, the game in which Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points. The record is now 370, when the Detroit Pistons beat the Denver Nuggets 186-184 in three overtimes in December 1983.

In 1961 – Smokey Robinson and the Miracles are at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot R&B Sides chart – for the eighth and final consecutive week with Shop Around. It was the second of 24 Top 10 soul hits for the group, their first of four #1s, and the song also peaked at #2 on the Hot 100. The song was written by Robinson and Motown Records founder Berry Gordy.
