Notes from around the human experience.

USA! USA!: One thing we don’t think you can argue with is that America is a shell of her former self. The country that defeated slavery, that won World War II, that put men on the moon is gone. We don’t think this is for forever, though it has certainly left the building and America is a subtandard country now.

Here We Go: There are examples every day. Here are a few of them, in no particular order:

  • The only country to put humans on the moon cannot even put anyone into orbit anymore.
  • We are at war with Iran, a country that represented no real threat to us, a war that was not declared by Congress (as mandated in the Constitution), and a war with no clear strategy except dropping as many bombs as possible on them.
  • Both our citizens and our government are fractured, partisan, and bickering messes.
  • The witless blather of a president whose self-named university was a boiler room and who is a man of zero moral or intellectual substance. He is governing us accordingly.
  • The Congress, media, and electorate that, from day one, has appeased him instead of standing up and saying no to his lies, blather, and nonsense.

Fly In The Ointment: More than anything, though, our continued tolerance of this idiocy is the biggest sign the American century has long been over. There was a time when America would’ve said no to Donald Trump, with both the media and the electorate dismissing him long before the 2016 primaries began.

Dry, Technical Matter: Collectively, we can’t be bothered anymore. America is well-fed and well-entertained now. We are content and no longer striving for anything more than the remote, and the only people we hold accountable now are our DoorDash drivers.

The Bottom Line: As George Carlin once said:

This species could have been so great, and now everybody just wants a new Salad Shooter or sneakers with lights in them. This is what we’ve settled for.

America and the world are paying the price. Instead of looking back at humans on Mars, we have federal troops in our cities killing our fellow citizens. Instead of a peaceful nation leading a more or less peaceful world, we’re kidnapping and assassinating world leaders. We have – maybe – before this half-century is out before we can no longer govern ourselves and someone comes in a does it for us.

He was a tad delusional, too, insisting that he’s “bond out” in a couple of hours, after which he’d supervise the firing of his arresting officers for gross misconduct…

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1876 – Alexander Graham Bell receives US patent #174465 for the telephone. Bell had filed his patent application on Feb 14, a little after Elisha Gray had filed a patent caveat – a notice of an intent to file a patent application – and claims that Bell had stolen Gray’s idea were not upheld in court. The first telephone call was made three days later when Bell called his assistant Thomas Watson at Bell’s Boston laboratory.

In 1954 – The Soviet Union wins the world ice hockey championship, defeating Canada 7-2 in the final game of the round-robin tournament in Stockholm. It was the first of 22 world championships for the Soviets before their dissolution and was the fourth of 16 silver medals for the Canadians to go along with 28 titles, a record. Sweden took the bronze medal.

In 2015 – Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the eighth of 14 consecutive weeks. The song also went to #1 in 16 other countries – including Lebanon, South Africa, and Great Britain – was Billboard’s #1 song of both the year and the decade, and the 5th-biggest song of the Hot 100 era in a 2021 survey. It remains the only #1 song for Ronson and was the fifth of ten #1 songs for Mars

Answer To The Last Trivia Questions
Knowledge is power.

The NBA record for fewest points in a game in the shot clock era is 119, a 62-57 win by the Boston Celtics over the Milwaukee Hawks in Providence, Rhode Island on February 27, 1955.
