The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.
1. War – Mankind’s calling card since time immemorial, it hasn’t gone away despite man’s evolving from eating their prisoners to capturing them and releasing them after the war…Planet currently estimated to have no less than 56 wars going on, with almost a quarter of a million deaths reported in 2025.
2. Donald Trump – US president still a man of zero (0) moral or intellectual substance, still a liar, still conducting the illegal/immoral Iran war, still being appeased by Congress, the media, and you and me, we the people….His threat to end Iranian civilization about as low a point as a president has gone, and it is time for his presidency to end,
3. Nikola Jokic – Barring someone getting 200 assists or rebounds in today’s finales, Denver center will become first player in NBA history to lead league in assists and rebounds per game…In 1967-68, Wilt Chamberlain let league in total assists in rebounds, the only time that has happened…Apropos of nothing whatsoever, 575 players have scored points in the NBA this season.
4. Artemis II – A classic Yay/Boo mission: Yay for sending humans farther away from Earth than we ever had before…Yay for a successful mission and a safe return…Boo for having to start from scratch in the third decade of the 21st century…America should’ve long ago been through with achieving and maintaining states of arousal for moon shots…We could’ve had humans on Mars in the 1980s had we wanted to.
5. NCAA Tournament – Sigh, the Cinderella Era appears to be over, as the lowest seed to win in the men’s tournament were #12 seeds, as seeds 13-16 wqent 0-16 this year and no lower seed won from the Elite 8 on…In the chick’s tournament, there was only one major upset in 63 games…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “pretty sure” this is the NIL Era manifesting itself, and it is only going to get worse when universities start revenue sharing.

In 1961 – Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin becomes the first human to travel into space. Traveling on Vostok 1, Gagarin orbited the Earth once, reaching a maximum altitude of 203 miles, and the entire mission took 108 minutes. It was the only spaceflight for Gagarin, who retired from the Soviet Air Force in 1968 as a Colonel. He also died in 1968, aged 34, during a test flight.
In 1953 – Ben Hogan establishes a new Masters tournament record for lowest 72-hole score, beating Ed Oliver by five strokes. Hogan shot a 14-under 274 Hogan broke the record of 279 established by Claude Harmon in 1948, and the record is now 268 by Dustin Johnson in 2020. It was the second and final Masters title for Hogan and his sixth of eight major titles, and this was Oliver’s highest Masters finish. Hogan was the first 40-year-old to win the Masters, a mark that stood until the following year when Sam Snead, 41, won it.
In 1986 – Falco is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with Rock Me Amadeus. The song went to #1 in nine other countries, including Sweden and Great Britain, and peaked at #6 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was its 28th-biggest song of the year. It was the second of three chart singles on the Hot 100 for Falco and remains his only #1 song. Falco, born Johann Holzel in Austria, died in 1998 at the age of 40 following a car crash in the Dominican Republic.
