USA! USA!: The surprise in President Trump’s State of the Union address isn’t that it contained distortions, misstatements, and outright falsehoods. That is par for the Trump course, lies are his stock-in-trade, and no one is surprised at them. You elect someone of zero moral or intellectual substance and this is what you get.
The More Things Don’t Change…No, what is a surprise is that you and me – we the people – continue to tolerate it. More than ten years after he first announced for the Republican nomination and started foisting his blather and nonsense on us, he is still dishing it out. Ignorance has now been legitimized. Anyone, from the president of the United States on down, can now spew whatever they want with impunity.
…The More They Don’t Change: No one ever told Trump no, you’re too ignorant to be president. The media didn’t. Instead of dismissing him – like a media paced by Walter Cronkite and, among others, Woodward and Bernstein would have – they cooed over him, treated his witless blather as legitimate news, and escorted him directly to the primaries, the nomination, and the White House. We voters chose to appease him and Congress does everything but wipe for him.
Dry, Technical Matter: History will wonder why. Why was an ignorant liar even given the time of day, much less taken seriously? Why are we allowing Trump to blather, bully, and overpower his way to idiocies like tariffs, kidnapping foreign leaders, and letting federal troops shoot American citizens in US cities? Why do we continue to lower ourselves to his standard of ignorance?
The Bottom Line: We deserve better than this. We deserve better than a blatherskite who is on record as believing the moon is part of Mars and that the American Revolution was won when the Continental Army secured British airports. But we are not getting better because America, collectively, is now as ignorant as its president, and we are getting the government we deserve.

In 1993 – A truck bomb explodes beneath the north tower of the World Trade Center. The bombers used a 1,300-pound fertilizer-based device that was designed to collapse the north tower into the south tower. The bomb was lit by four 20-foot fuses and resulted in six deaths and over one thousand injuries. Six people were eventually convicted and sentenced to 240 years in prison.
In 1989 – Tom Landry is fired as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys after 29 seasons. Landry was hired as the first Cowboys’ head coach in 1960, and his 29 consecutive seasons with one team and 20 consecutive winning seasons remain NFL records. Landry finished with a career record of 270-178-6, two Super Bowl titles, and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990. He was replaced by Jimmy Johnson.
In 1972 – Al Green is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Best Selling Soul Singles chart – for the eighth of nine consecutive weeks with Let’s Stay Together. It was the first of six #1 soul songs for Green, remains his only #1 on the Hot 100, and was Billboard’s #1 soul song of the year and its 11th-biggest pop hit. A version by Tina Turner went #26 pop and #3 soul in 1984.
