The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow makes yet more scratch paper at the hotel and it’s Sunday Spaghetti Night (SSN) at The Shire, as Sparrow completely loses his mind while making the sauce. Today’s Diary.

First tho, it had to go thru the Sparrow Legal Size Scratch Paper Protocol because you can’t merely cut legal size paper into quarters willy-nilly because the resulting scratch paper will be too big…Hence the protocol…I took it to the paper cutter in the storeroom, trimmed it to usual size and then cut that into fourths and BOOM, there you go, 32 new pieces of scrap paper…

In 1933 – The USS Ranger (CV-4) is launched in Newport News, Virginia. Though the US had other ships that had been aircraft carriers, Ranger is the first US ship designed and built as an aircraft carrier. It would be commissioned the following year, was found to be too slow to serve in the Pacific in World War II and saw service in the Atlantic. Ranger was decommissioned in 1946 and later sold for scrap.

In 1981 – The Boston Bruins defeat the Minnesota North Stars – now the Dallas Stars – 5-1 in a game that saw 84 penalties called, establishing a new NHL record. Each team’s 42 penalties also established new NHL marks. The combined mark broke the old record established a few weeks earlier when the Bruins and the Colorado Rockies combined for 64 penalties on January 3 and the team marks broke the record established by the Philadelphia Flyers, 38 on February 2, 1980. Both records have since been broken.

In 1984 – Van Halen is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of five consecutive weeks with Jump. It was Van Halen’s fifth Top 40 hit and while they would later have two other Top 10 hits, Jump remains their only #1 song. The song also went to #1 in Italy and Canada and ranked #6 on Billboard’s year-end chart.
