The Diary of a Nobody/September 12

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, September 12
Assistant Front Desk Manager Q had some sad news for me: he was shut out, no rewards club enrollments today!!!…He was not making that up…He advised it was one of those nights when virtually every arrival was already a member…Still, tho, he’s still leading Amy by five for the month.

Q had a couple of admin things for me to do when I reported for duty…The first was to sign something acknowledging that I support the home office’s human rights policy…I am not making that up…A company of assorted hotel franchises has a human rights policy…I fully support it, of course, and I signed with relish…Notably absent was the Night Auditor Bill of Rights, but I tend to enact those unilaterally, anyway.

There was also some training to take, something on housekeeping standards for non-housekeeping personnel…There were four videos to watch, each a few minutes in length and while a video played ol’ Sparrow didn’t actually watch them, preferring to minimize the screen and carry on with his project work…The subject bores me and it is hardly a bulletin to note that I have neither the interest in nor the aptitude for anything associated with cleaning anything whatsoever…Some might herald the opportunity to learn about how another department goes about its business but eff that noise, ol’ Sparrow ain’t one of them.

I bought some dental insurance this morning, too…I was covered under The Ex’s plan at the retailer, but that ended August 20 when the decree became final…It’s a bit less than $50 a month for routine visits and 50% coverage of the implants I am going to need in a year or two when the falsies wear out, so it’s a pretty good investment because implants aren’t cheap.

About midnight a couple of working men came in needing a room…They looked tired and you didn’t have to be Joe Friday to conclude that if it’s midnight and they’re in my lobby without a reservation their day hadn’t gone as planned and they didn’t need some stuffy night auditor complying with company policy…Which I had to break to get them two rooms.

The fly in the ointment was their boss was paying for it and they did not have his company credit card…Sigh…We cannot take cards over the phone…That’s etched in stone…I take it and even if it goes thru you can call your c/c company, protest the charge and get it written off.

However, to get an official credit card authorization form filled out would have taken a while so, in a stroke of brilliance, I told the boss to email me the front and back of the card and his ID and I would make it work…If they do raise a stink, I have pics of everything from their email but they won’t do that…It’s a company we do a lot of business with…Besides, if someone did hijack the bosses’ credit cards and email account, they could probably come and kill me, so I played along.

I got my walk in tonight…I was not in the mood to lift weights but the walk, yes, I was in the mood for that, for a variety of reasons: one, I wanted to see what was going on in my small town – nothing, of course – and I wanted some fresh air on a gorgeous evening and I wanted some exercise…Plus, you put off your walk enuff before you know it BOOM you’ve put off so many walks you’re not walking anymore.

It was about sunset when I set out, so to minimize danger  I took the Post Office Route, which is mostly sidewalk, and while some – like ol’ Sparrow, for instance – might whine about the temperature drop after the sun went down, it as a nice evening for a walk.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0930 Saturday until 1830 Saturday…9.0 hours for the day and 51.0 hours for the week, the first 50-hour sleep week in two months.
The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
