The Diary of a Nobody/December 24

Friends, it’ Read Free Week (RFW) at the site.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Sunday, December 24
The AGM was there when we reported for duty at the hotel tonite…He reported the key system still wasn’t working properly tho – in an upgrade from last nite – AGM said you could make keys on the right station – Sparrow’s home station – and why others thought differently wasn’t clear…(This proved to be true when we made some keys for a walk-in.)…He noted tho, that whenever Home Office Tech Support (HOTS) favors him with a callback, there will be no small amount of work to do, tho the technical specs he gave more or less went right over my head.

We also told the AGM we had fiddled around with every possibility about working four tens and that the only way we could make it work was that we had to come in Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nites…Nothing else made much sense from a labor/sleep standpoint…Now, we did have flexibility on the fourth day: we could come in either Thursday or Monday nites – we could make 20 hours at the veterans service office work either way – but the other three days were inviolable.

For his part, the AGM said he had yet another lead on a potential nite auditor…She is looking for something to supplement her current part-time job and might even might be open to picking up an evening shift…He added he wasn’t too thrilled about having a chick work by herself on overnites, but we reported we belonged to a nite audit group on Faceplant that has plenty of chicks working by themselves on graveyard and they never report any trouble…Or at least any trouble a guy wouldn’t be obliged to put up with, either.

Despite being freed from having to wear a uniform, the AGM has been wearing a sporty new hotel uniform vest lately…It’s anthracite gray with the hotel’s logo on the left chest and there’s a zippered pocket on the right chest, the type of pocket that would’ve been useful 40 years ago but no one had thought of it yet…Of course, we wear our black vest with our uniform shirt, but it’s five years old now and has been showing wear for a while and we told the AGM that is he gets one of the new vests, we’d wear it.

The big news is the hotel did not send out Christmas cards this year…Or if they did, they didn’t make us sign them…We’re grateful for this because good gravy, it’s a pain in the arse to sign a couple of hundred cards, especially for people you don’t know for a holiday that’s not particularly important to you…In fact, one year we only signed every other card and there were times we’d merely scrawl our initials.

The biggest news, tho, is that we procured the holiday prime rib this morning…I am not making that up…We were debating whether or not to get one right up until we put it in our cart…We’re heathens with no religious beliefs and are generally out of the present racket and Lord knows there are no decorations in the house and there have been years where we’ve taken a complete pass on the holiday.

But we’re taking a greater interest in the holiday this year than in years past…We’ve been binge-listening to Christmas music since our flight home from Louisville last month and, of course, we participated in the family present exchange and have a present from Cousin Danny waiting for us to open tomorrow…And while that’s hardly an all-in, Christmas GO! attitude it’s more effort than we’ve put in for a couple-three years, and under those circumstances, there’s no reason for the holiday feast to consist of the usual bachelor crap.

Plus, we’ve made pretty good prime ribs in the past and while we didn’t get that boxed deep-fried shrimp like we have in the past, we did get those tin biscuits we like, so it shouldn’t be too bad of a meal.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1100 Sunday until 2130 Sunday…10.5 hours for the day – an exciting start to the sleep week – but the hell of it is we woke up feeling exhausted…We have some zero clue why, and the clouds vanished soon enuff, but you’d think 9.5 hours down would leave you refreshed.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
