The Diary of a Nobody/September 28

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, September 28
Today was a very good day off…We got our rest, ate well, and got the work we were looking for done on our bonus project (BP).

After daily project work (DPW), we were at the 24/7 restaurant at the Monarch across the street around 0500…Regular readers of this crap may recall that some of the best hotcakes anywhere are served up here and they met the standard this time, too…They were bigger than we recalled, three huge ones taking up the entire plate, leaving no room for Syrup Runoff (SRO), a tactical error that, heroically, we were able to work around…There was a lot of sausage, too, and we were unable to finish our entire hotcake ration (HR)…You hate to leave hotcakes on the table – especially ones with crispy edges – but we declined the server’s offer of a to-go box and we were back in the room diving in on the BP before 0600 and – lacking the usual distractions presented at The Shire – things got done, exactly what we were looking for.

We’re not a machine, tho, and we started losing interest in the project around 1300…First, our focus started fading and then we started yawning…We were able to wrap up the element we were working on with satisfactory precision and were laying down doing some reading by 1330, a thoroughly satisfactory state of affairs…We were dozing off, too, after a while, which was not ideal because the buffet – which we know from experience has deep-fried shrimp – didn’t open until 1600.

We were in such a Power Leisure Mode (PLM) that we were too lazy to execute our plan for a pre-dinner toddy…The plan was to present ourselves at one of the several available bars for booze service (BS) around 1500 or so and get a couple of rounds in before the buffet opened at 1600 but at 1500 we were still lying in bed…Eventually, we did get up and waddle out and passed several bars but none looked particularly appealing for some reason despite all having the requisite booze available for pouring and at 1540 we were at the buffet…Faced with the options of going for a brewskie and being late for dinner – we were tired, recall, and really just wanted to go back to bed – or waiting in line 20 minutes for a timely evening meal we chose the latter…The hotel wasn’t that busy and we were the only ones in line for a while…The meal came with a couple of coupons for crab legs and lobster tails and we skipped both of them because they are too labor-intensive for our tastes.

We’ve been thinking about how we are going to adjust our schedule at the veterans service office (VSO) when we go to four ten-hour shifts at the hotel…Right now we are at the VSO Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and we will be moving either the Wednesday or Friday shift to Tuesday…If we move the Wednesday shift to Tuesday we will have Wednesday and Thursday off – two full calendar days without labor, the first time we’ve had that in several years…If we move the Friday shift to Tuesday, we will have Thursday and most of Friday off, because we will have to be at the hotel at 2200.

We were thinking that Wednesday and Thursday off would be nice but then it hit us that our sleep schedule really isn’t going to change: we’ll still be going to sleep in the late afternoon regardless of which days we have off and it that case, it might be best to take Thursday and Friday off because then we can get a proper Friday Nap (FN) in…If we’re working at the VSO Friday we will only get a couple of hours.

And then it hit us that not only are we going to have to adjust our days at the VSO, we are also going to have to adjust the hours somewhat, too…And at that point we threw our hands up and deferred the matter to another time…We decide when the VSO is open and as long as we’re there 20 hours a week it doesn’t matter when it is open, so nothing has to be decided now.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1730 Wednesday until 0030 Thursday…7.0 hours for the nite and 33.0 hours for the week, both pretty routine totals.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
