The Diary of a Nobody/April 29

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

No Coke Order today!!!

I am not making that up.

Too bad, too, because we need water…There are zero – repeat, zero – cases in the back and only a few bottles in the cooler and when slow season coincides with the dreaded end-of-month economies BOOM, no water is ordered despite the fact you desperately need it.

The big news is the alarm went off tonite at the hotel…Recall earlier this month it was going off left and right for reasons no one was sure of, tho the problem eventually got fixed…Tonite, we reported to the front desk and the Front Desk Supervisor runs off to close the indoor pool and take his nightly constitutional, and BOOM, there goes the alarm.

We ignore it at first, in the strategic hope the FDS will be back to hear it, but, heck, his constitutional can be of unknown duration and then we remember the alarm panel in the far wing and that you can hear it there, too, so we go shut it off..The FDS eventually returns and it turns out the FDS had it go off a couple of hours earlier: some wire grounded somewhere where it shouldn’t be and we lost interest after that, because crap like that goes way over our heads.

Despite the fact we are dead slow right now – we were back from walking the hotel before midnite – the year-over-year totals are up…I am not making that up…We won’t be here for end of month, but to date this month, room revenue is up 30K from last April on 253 more rooms, and while those aren’t earth-shattering figures – and revenue is about a tenth of February’s record haul – no one is going to turn them away, either.

The front desk mobile is on the fritz, too…We came in to find the screen showing the end of a charger and a web address to fix it…You go to the site and the instructions are to plug your phone in and the fly in the ointment is it’s an iPhone and needs to be plugged into a Mac…So no solution and no mobile phone to transfer the hotel’s landline to…So if someone is dying and needs paramedics while we’re out walking the hotel, they are probably going to die.

Dray the Dairy Delivery Driver (D4) was late this morning…I am not making that up…He didn’t show up until 0630 or so and claims to’ve overslept and was running so late he didn’t even have time to chat…He did note, however, he highly doubted he would be bothering me at the hospital at zero dark thirty on Friday morning like he was obliged to last week.

Then a workingman comes up holding a free breakfast coupon and announces he has two rooms with two queen beds, each stuffed with four guys, but only two coupons per room…We look up his account, and his rate code does include breakfast, but these deals only provide two coupons per room…Either two guys are out of luck, or you toss the coupons into the pot and split the remainder…He nodded knowingly – as if this were obvious to any idiot – but then wondered if the two not favored with coupons could eat in the restaurant…That seemed a rather odd question because, of course, they can, but we learned in submarine school that the only stupid question is the one you don’t ask, tho this seemed to challenge that theory.

Head Housekeeper Gloria had a funny line this morning…She was farting around the front desk waiting for guests to leave and we started telling her the plan for today was to go to the next county to shop and eat immediately after leaving the hotel…Recall last week we went at nite, after sleeping all day, and we told her it was completely different being in the next county – where she lives – that late.

The next county, after dark…And Sparrow is there!!!
We made it sound a lot more exciting than it really was because there really isn’t a whole hell of a lot going on either with ol’ Sparrow or in the next county…The line from Gloria:
The rebel is here!!!

We did go to the next county after the hotel: a meal at the Mexican joint and a trip to the grocery store…Usually, of course, we go to the retailer, but we were in the mood to mix things up…We weren’t completely thrilled with the meal nite shift produced last week, and we are pleased to report day shift was up to the usual standard.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1030 Tuesday until 1800 Tuesday…7.5 hours for the day and 20.0 hours for the week, not the strongest Tuesday Total (TT) ever, but not too bad, either.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

The Diary of a Nobody was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
