The Diary of a Nobody/June 12

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, June 12
Tucker was there when we reported for duty at the General Hospital Security Department (GHSD) tonite…Well, actually he was out roaming the parking lot because we saw him when we drove in…He was at the far end and was actually exiting the parking lot, which is almost interesting because all there is some vacant land on the other side of a small rise that leads to the street that leads to the retailer.)…We have some zero clue what he was doing or where he could possibly be going…The hospital actually owns that land, but it’s hardly an area we patrol, unless we wanted to audit how many foxes we could find…Tucker showed up about 0930, and a check of the scan chart shows he had just completed a parking lot tour.

Tucker is one of those who prefers to be busy at work and he admitted he is finding it tuff sledding here at GHSD because even shorthanded, there isn’t all that much to do…He said he used to serve in restaurants, which explains a lot because serving a busy restaurant does keep you hopping…We guess…We don’t really know, of course, because we wouldn’t last five minutes in a job like that, and Tucker said he’s open to a good serving job if one came up…We don’t understand this nonsense at all…The less there is to do on the clock, the better is ol’ Sparrow’s motto…Actually, do as little as possible in every situation is Sparrow’s motto.

We accomplished that mission tonite…The first hour was a tactical combination of farting around and getting our paperwork organized, with Tucker asking about our trip…Curious, he had Birmingham called up on a map app and we got him to the old stadium we went to see, and then he went to STREET VIEW and BOOM, there you are…It’s kind of funny, because the street view isn’t a whole lot different than actually being there, a phenomenon we’ve run into in the past…It is different, of course, because you’re actually there, but the difference isn’t awe-inspiring.

An hour into the shift we ventured out for some tours…It’s warm now, so we could get a parking lot tour in, and regular readers of this crap may – or they may not – recall that when Asher and I worked together we’d start with a parking lot tour…We were feeling frisky, tonite, tho, and we started with an office building tour, then seamlessly rolled into an interior tour, before heading outside.

You have to put some thought into this, tho…First, in the office building, you have to plan because the main office building entrance is not only a stop on the office building tour, but a stop on the interior tour as well…This means, ideally, it is the last stop on the former and the first stop on the latter…So you plan accordingly, tho this means you are walking up stairs twice, which goes against everything we stand for, but it’s better than backtracking.

Then for the interior tour, you make the ER an early stop instead of the last stop, because once you get to the far side, you’re heading outdoors, and you don’t want to have to walk back across the hospital to the ER.

We ran into Karla, too…She was happy to see me but not ecstatic, and did not immediately start rearranging her hair…Plus, she didn’t use my name like I used hers, so plainly she didn’t remember it, so we didn’t ask her out, despite the fact we had something appropriate ready on the translate app on our phone.

Boy, we set a blistering pace at the track today: 60 minutes for 4.2 miles – two laps in each lane – a fast 4.22 mph pace…Too fast actually, we thought as we started heading home, because the previous PB was an hour-five or so and to clip five whole minutes off is hard, especially since we walked the whole way and didn’t run/jog at all…We started thinking that, perhaps, we missed a lap, but maybe not: our pace was strong the whole way, because every time we focused on our pace we didn’t need to increased anything, we were already at the speed we wanted…We’ll see what the deal is tomorrow…Offhand, our money is on us missing a lap, but we’ll see…We stopped for some shoulder therapy, too, on the way out, and after Tuesday’s day off, the shoulders were eager for the work, so eager we did twelve reps instead of ten on the last two sets.

The big news is the annual small town summer Thursday gatherings – known as Walnut Street here, for where it’s held – started today, with ol’ Sparrow running into it both on the way out to the high school track and on the way back…Actually, on the way out, they were still setting up, but it was in full swing heading home and, while these things can sometimes be kind of hokey, it looked fun…There were some food trucks, and some local farmers had some goodies out, plus there were some other vendors and even a band…Ol’ Sparrow, in the Upset of the Year, actually ventured in fully prepared to mingle, but we didn’t see anybody we knew.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0830 Thursday until 1630 Tuesday…8.0 hours for the day and 38.5 hours for the week, one hell of a Thursday total (TT)…God bless all of you.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

The Diary of a Nobody was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
