The Diary of a Nobody/June 7

Sure, it’s Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, June 7
There were changes made at the hotel on my days off…The Front Desk Supervisor (FDS) had the details…In no particular order:

  • The nite audit is now to be done after midnite…Previously, we could do it whenever we damn well pleased…Now, tho, it’s no earlier than midnite, which is in line with most other hotels we’ve ever worked at…The exception was Hotel B, when we could do it anytime after midnite eastern time…The FDS said this was because of changes made to The System that, needless to say, went way over our head.
  • Cash drawer spreadsheets (CDSS) are now to be scanned and emailed to both the FDS and AGM Tammy…This is something else that is in line with other hotels…Cash drawers here are routinely off, either over or short, and this is something that is not tolerated at other hotels…In fact, we once worked at a joint where the nite auditor was responsible for finding who was responsible for the error and regularly coming up with a short drawer would get you fired.
  • We no longer have to do those infernal restaurant receipts…Recall, we stopped sorting them out by credit card type a while back because nobody was paying attention to them after Controller Candace left…Now, with the point-of-sale system in the restaurant, we don’t have to check and see the coupons were adjusted off to the correct account…Now, we do have to check out the new house accounts, but they automatically check themselves back in, just like two accounts we’ve been doing this for for a year or so.

We had a laff with a guy and his boy who came by to get some sundry stand goodies (SSG)…We noticed his debit card was from our bank, one that caters to veterans, and we asked which branch he had been in. He said the Army, where he had repaired helicopters…We told him we were on an old diesel submarine years ago…He said damn, I don’t think I would’ve liked that…We told him we all had our place in the service, that we hadn’t thought twice about being underwater in a boat, and trotted out our usual line about how we would’ve wept if we’d ever have found ourselves in a foxhole.

Heck, we would’ve been so useless you would’ve killed us…Frag Sparrow!!!…Frag Sparrow!!! would’ve been the plan of the day.

We’re not entirely sure that’s true because we tend to keep our heads…On the other hand, we’re not entirely sure it’s not true, either…But we would’ve been content to pass any hostilities underwater.

We are pleased to report that ol’ Sparrow is officially back to normal…This follows this week’s good but exhausting trip to Birmingham…Proof we are back to normal can be found in our full day’s sleep (see Sleep Log below) and our usual 6.7-mile walk, our first since last weekend…We were ready for it, too, tho we didn’t bother setting the stopwatch for it: our sole goal was to get 6.7 miles in at a good pace…The weather cooperated, too, with Mother Nature favoring us with temperatures in the low 70s, and the only thing the usual west wind was blowing in was more sunshine and some high clouds…We stretched before we headed out, and our legs felt good the whole way, tho when we got home, the top of our left foot started copping an attitude.

The only fly in the ointment is we don’t think our pace was all the great…It wasn’t leisurely, but it probably wasn’t brisk (+3.5 mph)…We couldn’t be bothered to note when we left The Shire, tho we can reckon it to within a couple minutes and it turned out our pace was a strong 3.7 mph, tho it should be noted we ran for two or three stretches…It should also be noted our fastest speed is Dead Slow, so our time probably isn’t effected all that much.

Bandit was whining for treats when we left for the hotel tonite, but we were firm…Recall, he’s getting so many treats he does not appear to be eating his regular dry food…So we’ve taken measures…Now, he only gets treats when we wake up and when we get home from work, and both times he’s getting less than usual…So he should be getting about half what he used to get, or maybe even two-thirds less…As noted, he is not pleased with this, but we’re standing firm on this one: he must eat his regular dry food, too.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0930 Saturday until 1630 Saturday…7.0 hours for the day and 47.5 hours for the week, the first sub-50-hour sleep week (SW) in a month or so, but the Birmingham trips screwed us up.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

The Diary of a Nobody was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
