The Diary of a Nobody/May 1

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, May 1
Once again, The New Guy (TNG) had things dead calm when we reported for duty at the General Hospital Security Department (GHSD) tonite…Recall, in the past TNG has been known for drawing chaos to the hospital, but it’s been mellow the past couple of weeks.

The big news is ol’ Sparrow had a second officer with him all nite, the first time that’s happened since Asher went to day shift a couple of months ago…TNG stayed until 0300 when Hunter came in, with both doing 12-hour shifts….There will probably be a lot of 12-hours shifts available because TNG had the latest on Connie who, recall, wrenched her knee a couple of weeks ago: out at least four months…He added Hunter had to threaten workers comp to get her claim approved, telling them that the hospital had video coverage of the accident, but they would have to get a court order in order to see it…The next day the claim was approved.

The big news is Hunter and ol’ Sparrow did some parking enforcement this morning…I am not making that up…Part of the main parking lot was getting torn up – probably because some board member’s cousin has a contract for doing so – and we were there to ensure employees didn’t park in the available main lot spots which wouldn’t be a problem if all employees parked where they were goddamned supposed to, in the west lot…They do not…They park wherever the hell they want and GHSD really doesn’t have the authority to stop them…Hunter said “they” are talking about it actually enforcing parking regulations, but how appears to be a sticking point, with Hunter’s suggestion that we start puncturing tires apparently not being considered.

Because we were curious, we asked if he and TNG were picking up extra hours because HQ wanted to see more shifts covered, and he said that was part of it…Greed on his part was part of it, too, but he said, yeah, they were down to between half and two-thirds of available hours being taken and HQ’s preferred figure is at least 90%.

After a week or so, it can hardly be the Upset of the Year that Bandit is completely in-step with his new Treats Lifestyle (TL)…It should also be noted that our plan to dictate the Treat Schedule (TS) turned out to be a complete failure…We had planned a twice-a-day issue: when we got home from work and before heading out for The Walk, but, like the cat before him, Bandit announces when it is time for treats, going to the Disbursement Zone (DZ) in the kitchen and meowing.

It was funny today because, also like the cat before him, Bandit knows when we are waking up, as opposed to merely stirring or, as likely as not, getting up to use the can…This afternoon – again, reference to the Sleep Log is made – we woke up from a dream and BOOM, Bandit meowed and lept from his corner of the bed and scooted to the Disbursement Zone…He knew Daddy was up for good

For the second day in a row, The Walk was abbreviated, and, almost interestingly, for the very same reasons yesterday’s was!!!…I am not making that up.

Like yesterday, we started strong…We headed out to the gym in Main Street and then turned left and, again like yesterday, there was goddamn track practice going on at the high school…Crap…We were up early (see Sleep Log below) and while we didn’t have unlimited time, we were hoping to do one lap in each lane, which is 2.1 miles…So much for that, tho, thanks to kids who probably should’ve been working their phones instead of getting fresh air and exercise…So we headed back to The Shire…This would make a 2.5 mile walk – half of what we were looking for – and we’d turn around and consider where to go from there.

Well, we turned around at The Shire and BOOM, like yesterday, the weather turned again…As if on cue, the wind kicked up and out of nowhere – nowhere! – it started sprinkling…Crap…So we turned around and headed in, after a brisk but unsatisfying 2.5 miles.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0930 Thursday until 1630 Thursday…7.0 hours for the day and 38.0 hours for the week, both satisfactory totals.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

The Diary of a Nobody was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
