The Diary of a Nobody/April 4

It’s Red Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, April 4
Holy Crap
It was big news in triplicate tonite at the hotel: the #1 and #4 keys are back in the key safe, the Easter decorations are up, and Romeo’s been fired…I am not making any of those things up.

We’ve been here over seven years and longtime readers of this nonsense know keys have been a problem here since AGM Brandon lost the manager’s keys ages ago…Those were eventually replaced by the Two Keys – so named because a key has a “2” on it – and those came and went and the hope was the new key safe would solve these problems.

It didn’t…At the beginning, there were three keys useful to us front deskers in the key safe but soon enuff all three were missing, leaving us to use AGM Tammy’s keys…Tonite, tho, the one, three, and four keys were in there, tho how long they’ll remain there is a mystery.

The Easter decorations are secular, mainly Easter bunnies in assorted forms, tho there are some flowers at each front desk station: roses, orchids, carnations – we’re not entirely sure what, but they’re certainly flowers…But we don’t know effing flowers, tho we can say with some certainty they aren’t rhubarbs or tulips, because we have those in our gardens at The Shire, tho we only that because The Ex pointed them out to us, along with the apple and cherry trees.

Romeo’s firing probably isn’t the Upset of the Year…More than one person here has complained about things he doesn’t do, and he doesn’t show up for every shift, either…Robert said Chris worked the nite audit on all three of my nites off and he wasn’t very pleased about it, making the firing decision rather easy…Robert also said Pierro – yes, Pierro – is the leading candidate to take those three nites, but Pierro is the one who can confirm that.

A Slow Night
Recall we had some snow this week, and the mountain got over a foot, and you might think the town would be packed for the last weekend of ski season, with people looking to get some last runs in.

Don’t think that…The first sign of this actually came yesterday, when, curious, we checked availability online, and rates were rock bottom all over town…Then driving in tonite there wasn’t a line of cars coming down from the pass, and the parking lot wasn’t all that full, either…All told, we were about half full tonite, and we’re only a third booked right now for tomorrow nite.

This Is Sparrow, How Can I Help You?
We spent no small amount of time early on talking with this dolt who sounded like he was making his first-ever hotel reservation…Heck, maybe his first ever phone call…He called looking for a room on a June weekend and we quoted him $750 and change for three nights (rates vary each nite) and then he asks if it would be cheaper if he were with a baseball team…Well, generally, yes, but we explained that teams arrange a block of rooms at a certain rate in advance…We checked, and while we had blocks set up for that weekend, there wasn’t one for his team.

Could the rooms be with the express hotel???
Of course, they could…Confusion between us and the express version of the hotel – which, again, we don’t own – started five minutes after the express opened…He said he’d call them, and we said sure, keep us posted, and he said he would, as if he’d just been assigned a top-secret spy mission…He lied, because he never did call back.

In Other News…
We also heard from our friend RN Beth from the hospital…She called about 0200 to say a friend of a guest she was told was staying here had died…Now, she said, she knew we could not tell her if the person was staying here, but if he was, could we tell him his buddy died…Another first in ol’ Sparrow’s long, checkered history of knocking around front desks…As it was, he wasn’t staying here,

But what if he was, then what???…Do you go wake him up and tell him “hey, you’re buddy just bought the farm” or do you leave a note under the door and have him contact you???…We probably would’ve left a note under the door…I mean, the guy’s dead…There’s nothing to do except make notifications and, perhaps, arrangements, and those are things best done fully rested.

(Beth being Beth, she called later to report the guy was found, not at the express like we’d suggested, but at a completely different hotel chain.)

A Nice Day For A Walk
It was gorgeous this afternoon when we headed to the gym…After our usual forms and some weights, we headed out for a walk, but the fly in the ointment was the setting sun was directly in our eyes heading west…(Whining like this probably explains why we never considered being Navy SEALS.)…So the only west walking we did was the quarter-mile out from the gym to the post office…Then we headed back and when we got back to the gym turned right, which those keeping score at home know takes you out to the high school…At the high school, we turned and headed back to the gym, bravely avoiding the setting sun after the initial segment…All told, it was about a mile-and-a-half trek.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log:
0830 Saturday until 1600 Saturday…7.5 hours for the day and 49.5 hours for the week, just shy of our preferred 50 hours, but still not too bad…God bless all of you.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

The Diary of a Nobody was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
