Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1870 – Hiram Revels becomes the first Black elected to serve in the US Congress when he is elected to the US Senate by the Mississippi legislature. Revels was elected to serve the remainder of the term for the seat that had been vacant since Mississippi seceded from the Union in 1861. Revels served until the following March, and later was the first president of what is now Alcorn State University.

In 1964 – Cassius Clay, later Muhammad Ali, wins the world heavyweight boxing title for the first time when Sonny Liston retired before the start of the seventh round in Miami Beach. Ali would defend the title nine times, including a rematch with Liston the following year, before having it stripped in 1967. Ali would again win the title in 1974 and 1978 before retiring in 1981 after a loss to Trevor Berbick.

In 2012 – Kelly Clarkson is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second of three non-consecutive weeks with Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You). It was the tenth of twelve Top 10 hits for Clarkson and her third and most recent #1. The song also went to #1 in six other countries, including Slovakia and Poland, peaked at #8 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 7th-biggest song of the year.
