The Diary of a Nobody/February 19

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Monday, February 19
We met the new gal, W, tonite…She’s the one hired to work the three nites I’m off and someone had the day off and she was there when I got here…This did cause one change to ol’ Sparrow’s new nightly routine.

Recall we’ve been in the habit of retiring to the back office to process registration cards for the next day’s arrivals, but after we attended to some guests, W retired to the back office to dive in on the shredding…This is a task we abandoned long ago and if she wants to do it, more power to her, so we stayed up front and did the registration cards…It wasn’t any harder doing them standing up than it is sitting down, and after the first few I went and delivered a comforter to 165 while W finished the shredding, so we ended up in the back office anyway.

While delivering the comforter we took the opportunity to walk the hotel, but it was really too early for the definitive, final walk of the nite, but there was some stuff in the hall – a couple of pizza boxes and a pile of towels…Later, after finishing the nite audit, we walked it again, just for funsies.

After we were done processing registration cards, we went back out front and W was talking with a Korean gal…She was on the phone with the Front Desk Supervisor (FDS), too, and seemed the issue was the gal had purchased breakfast as part of her stay and it turned out she wasn’t taking her morning meal at the restaurant…The gal was cheap and snarky and did a brilliant job of turning her conundrum over and making it our fault…She noted there really wasn’t enuff time to go to the restaurant for an “official” breakfast because she preferred to get to the ski area even before our first shuttle left at 0800…She wanted a refund…Not sure what to do, W had called the FDS, and after talking about it a bit, the gal was invited to come back in the afternoon, when the FDS would be delighted to talk about it in person.

It’s tuff to say how this will go…On the one hand, you pay for breakfast, it’s not out fault if you can’t make the logistics work no matter how much you insist otherwise…On the other hand, if you have no shame and less propriety, whining loud and long enuff may very well get you your way…Usually Asians are very polite and above this nonsense and while you can’t walk all over them, they do understand logic. But there’s one in every crowd, I guess because this gal was emphatic that she wanted a refund.

Gabriella showed up in the lobby immediately after her shift at the restaurant, which she said was very busy, non-stop from clock-in to closing…Evidently, this is a classic Yay/Boo situation: Yay for being busy and making good tips…Boo, tho, for not even getting time for a break…As usual, Gabriela took up one-half of the large lobby table with two backpacks, her dinner, and assorted clothes…She paid some lip service to going to the gym, but her other job had started at 0530 Sunday morning and she was tired, and she didn’t go, preferring to sit in the lobby for an hour…This is hardly the first workout she’s missed, too, because she is starting to put on weight.

Then W clocked out and waited in the lobby for her ride to get here, and Gabriela and she started chatting…Now, it was plain the two had met before but boy, we’d hate for W (who is from West Africa) to get caught up in the Gabriela Chat Vortex (GCV)…It would be disastrous for international relations…The West African women we’ve known don’t blab a fraction as much as Mexican women do (no one does, really), but she brilliantly deferred all of Gabriela’s talking points, and her ride showed up soon enuff.

Recall we’re headed to the big city Tuesday morning and, as usual, we put off preparations until the last possible moment, so there were some things to do when we got home…Laundry needed to be done and we had to refill our supplement containers, not to mention taking care of the cat, to include changing the litter in her box…We’re supposed to be at the capitol at 1600 for a protest of some sort with other Minor Party members…It will be our first protest and we’re wondering if we should leave bail money with someone, but we’re all pretty low-key, so that probably won’t be necessary.

Also not crystal clear is how we are going to get there…Recall when we go to ball games in the big city, we’ve long been in the habit of parking in the suburbs and taking the train in…The capitol is only a mile or so from the stadium and we really don’t want to fart around with downtown/Capitol Hill traffic and offhand, we can’t see any reason not to take the train in here, too…The weather should cooperate, too.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1030 Monday until 2030 Monday…10.0 hours for the day and 20.5 hours for the week, both phenomenal totals.

We were grateful for – and somewhat surprised by – every hour…Recall we’re usually in bed no earlier than mid-afternoon on Mondays and veterans of keeping odd hours know sleep habits are sometimes tuff to break, but not today…Now, we did cheat and take some Zzz-Sleep because we won’t get to bed again until Tuesday nite in Casinoville, and we got lucky; it did its work brilliantly…God bless all of you.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.

Coming soon! Gaylon’s books in actual book form!
