In 1958 – The flooding of the St Lawrence Seaway – a system of channels and locks along the St Lawrence River – begins. Ten towns were lost to the flooding, with some residents moved to a planned community in southern Ontario, though some communities were moved. The seaway allows ships to travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, and the flooding took four days.
In 1903 – The first Tour de France begins in Montgeron. The race was run in six stages, finishing in Paris on July 19, with each stage between 167 and 293 miles in length. 21 cyclists participated in all six stages, and Frenchman Maurice Garin won the race in 94 hours, 3 minutes, his only Tour win, and he earned 6,075 francs, about $40,000 in today’s money. The 2025 Tour de France begins Saturday, with the winner receiving a bit more than half a million dollars.
In 1972 – The Rolling Stones are at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the third of four consecutive weeks with Exile on Main St. The album went to #1 in five other countries, including Norway and Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 2nd-biggest album of the year. The song produced two chart singles, including Happy, which featured lead vocals by Keith Richards and peaked #22, which remains the only Rolling Stones single not sung by Mick Jagger. It was the third of ten #1 albums for the group.
