In 1862 – Robert Smalls – born into slavery in South Carolina – maneuvers the CSS Planter through Charleston Harbor to the US naval blockade surrounding it during the Civil War. The ship would later be commissioned the USS Planter, with Smalls named commanding officer, the first Black to command a US Navy ship, and Smalls would later go on to serve in the South Carolina and US House of Representatives. The Confederate captain of the Planter had been ashore at the time of the escape.
In 1942 – Jim Tobin of the Boston Braves ties the major league record for most home runs in a game by a pitcher in a 6-5 win over the Chicago Cubs. Tobin also pitched a complete game 5-hitter for the win, and he had 17 home runs in a 9-year major league career.
In 1989 – Bon Jovi is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with I’ll Be There For You. The song also peaked at #18 in Great Britain and was Billboard’s 23rd-biggest song of the year. The song was written by band members Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora.
