Notes From Around Our Human Experience
USA! USA! You know, it’s not really a surprise President Trump, speaking at the Republican National Convention in Dallas, said he would send every American $5,000 if Republicans retained control of the House and Senate following November’s midterm elections. Donald Trump is an ignorant liar, a man of zero moral or intellectual substance, and as a convicted felon, he is certainly not above some bribery.
Fly In The Ointment: No, the surprise is we are tolerating it. A hundred years from now, all new people – including Americans, if there are any left – will look back on this era of American politics and marvel that we tolerated Trump’s blather at all.
Dry, Technical Matter: America, however, is in the seventh decade of TV and fast food being focal points of our American life. We are well entertained and well fed, with full bellies and empty minds, so when the media legitimized his blather, we were open to it.
Gaylon For Congress…Vote Early, Vote Often: We deserve better than this. We deserve better than a witless blatherskite renaming gulfs and lakes, starting a pointless war with Iran, and bribing voters with $5,000 checks. We deserve better than the Republicans who continue to enable this and the Democrats who are doing nothing about it.
The Bottom Line: The midterms are less than two months away, and the choice could not be clearer: we can retain the status quo, or we can demand better, because we deserve better than what we have now: ignorance, perpetual war, and $40 trillion of debt. All three elements will eventually destroy our country. We deserve better than this, too. It is time to start demanding better of our government and, ultimately, ourselves.

We enjoyed a scotch, too, but there was a conundrum there: there was too much for one shot, but not enuff for two…In finest Sparrow tradition, we stood there in the kitchen staring at the bottle crossly with our hands on our hips…

Extra, extra, read all about it.
In 1776 – Captain Nathan Hale of the Continental Army’s 19th Regiment volunteers for spy duty for General George Washington. The American Army is in New York City and Washington needs information on British troop locations and movements. Hale proves useful but is captured on September 21 and hanged the following day. His body was never found, and there is no evidence he ever said he regretted only having one life to give for his country.
In 1932 – Johnny Frederick of the Brooklyn Dodgers establishes a new major league record for most pinch-hit home runs in a season in a 6-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Frederick’s 8th-inning home run was his sixth pinch-hit home run of the year, research into whose record he broke was inconclusive, and the record is now seven, done twice, by Dave Hansen of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2000 and Craig Wilson of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2001.
In 1977 – The Emotions are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the fourth of five non-consecutive weeks with Best of My Love. The song also peaked at #4 in Great Britain, spent four weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was its 3rd-biggest song of the year. It was the second of three Top 40 hits for the group, their first of two Top 10s, and remains their only #1 hit. The song also won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.
