The Daily Dose/April 29, 2023
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

Friends, your Daily Dose will return; we are on vacation.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow goes to Disneyland. Today’s Diary.

Riding the Autopia with Pa Sparrow is still a great memory.

So, of course, Pa Sparrow joined me for this trip…He asked how I was doing and we were pleased to report we “we’re doing OK, Pop”…It was hardly surprising to note that we were dressed more or less the same and when I looked at him after turning towards the road he was gone, another good Autopia memory with Pop, 50 years after they started.

The Diary of a Nobody/April 27 & 28

Editor’s Note: at over 1,400 words, this is the longest Diary entry ever.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

The Daily Dose/Friday, April 28, 2023

We are on vacation.

We do not anticipate The Daily Dose running at all, though The Diary of a Nobody will run, intermittently, perhaps.

We had a Diary entry for today, but a technical glitch saw it lost to the internet depths.

It’s probably for the best, though. We were slightly hung over when we wrote it, the process was a chore, and it probably wasn’t up to the usual standard of drivel you’ve come to expect, anyway.

Thank you for reading,
-gk

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow forgets to make coffee for Dray the Dairy Delivery Driver. Today’s Diary.

What happened was we thought about getting a pot of joe going when we first reported for duty, but dismissed it as being entirely too early and made a mental note to do it while eating…We remembered that mental note but then a goddamn guest rang the bell and we promptly forgot about it…

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1865 – John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln, is shot dead by a Union soldier at a farm about 45 miles south of Washington, D.C. Booth and an accomplice had arrived at the farm the previous day, with Union troops trapping him in a barn before setting fire to the barn, with a soldier shooting Booth while he was still inside. Booth’s body was taken to the Washington Navy Yard and was stored in assorted places before being turned over to the Booth family in 1869 and buried in a family plot in Baltimore.

In 1952 – Patty Berg establishes a new LPGA record for the lowest round in the second round of the Richmond (Virginia) Open. Berg shot a 64, beating the mark established by Babe Zaharias and Opa’ Hill by two strokes. Berg would later win the tournament, her 40th of 60 LPGA titles, and her 15 major wins remain a record for women. Berg died in 2006. Berg’s record has been bettered several times since, and the mark is now 59, by Annika Sorrenstam of Sweden, in 2001.

In 1975 – Billie Jo Spears is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week with Blanket on the Ground. It was the tenth of 34 country hits for Spears, her second of five Top 10 hits, and remains her only appearance at #1 on a Billboard chart in a career that spanned from 1968-83.  The song also went #2 country in Canada, #6 pop in Great Britain, peaked at #78 on the Hot 100, and was Billboard’s 30th-biggest country song of the year.

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1792 – The first public execution in France with a guillotine is conducted, when highwayman Nicholas Pelletier is beheaded in front of what is now Paris’ city hall. Reports indicate the crowd was displeased with the swift and relatively painless nature of the execution. The guillotine was named after Dr Joseph-Ignace Guillotin, a proponent – though not the inventor – of a more painless execution method and the implement was last used in France in 1977.

In 1952 – The Minneapolis Lakers win the NBA title, defeating the New York Knicks 82-65 to win the series four games to three. It was the third of an NBA-record 17 NBA titles for the Lakers and was the second of six runner-up finishes for the Knicks. Scheduling conflicts meant all but the seventh game were played in secondary arenas, with the Lakers playing in St Paul and the Knicks at the 69th Street Armory.

In 2015 – Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of twelve non-consecutive weeks with See You Again. The song also went to #1 in 29 other countries, including the Commonwealth of Independent States, Norway, and Great Britain, went to #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, was their 3rd biggest song of the year, and 25th-biggest of the decade. It was the second and most recent #1 song for Khalifa and remains the only #1 song for Puth. The song was from the soundtrack to the movie Furious 7.

The major league record for most walks in a game by a team is 19, done twice, by the Louisville Colonels of the American Association in 1887 and by the Washington Senators in 1971, in a 20-inning game.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow sure has been spending an awful lot of time in the sack, lately. Today’s Diary.

Ol’ Sparrow is already in vacation mode, reporting directly to bed after getting home and feeding the cat…Now, recall we had ten hours of sleep Saturday, so we were hardly tired, but reporting to the chair for reading duty seemed to be too much work…

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1704 – The first regular newspaper in what would become the United States is published for the first time in Boston. The Boston News-Letter was subsidized by the Crown, the lead story in the first edition concerned Catholics in Scotland, and the paper would publish until February 1776. The first newspaper in what would become the US was Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick, which published one edition in Boston in 1690.

In 1957 – The Cincinnati Reds establish a new National League record for most walks in an inning in an 8-2 win over the Chicago Cubs. The Reds walked nine times in the inning, the first five consecutively, and scored seven runs on one hit. Research into whose record the Reds broke was inconclusive and the major league record is eleven, by the New York Yankees against the Washington Senators in 1949. – Editor’s Note: the record is listed under the Team Batting section, and not the Team Pitching section.

In 1976 – Emmylou Harris is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week with Together Again. It was the first of seven #1 country hits for Harris and her second of 27 Top 10 hits. In 1964 Buck Owens went #1 country with the song and in 1966 Ray Charles hit both the Hot 100 and soul chart with it, making it one of the few songs to hit on all three major Billboard singles chart.
