Writing worth reading. Usually.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow sure has been spending an awful lot of time in the sack, lately. Today’s Diary.

Ol’ Sparrow is already in vacation mode, reporting directly to bed after getting home and feeding the cat…Now, recall we had ten hours of sleep Saturday, so we were hardly tired, but reporting to the chair for reading duty seemed to be too much work…

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1704 – The first regular newspaper in what would become the United States is published for the first time in Boston. The Boston News-Letter was subsidized by the Crown, the lead story in the first edition concerned Catholics in Scotland, and the paper would publish until February 1776. The first newspaper in what would become the US was Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick, which published one edition in Boston in 1690.

In 1957 – The Cincinnati Reds establish a new National League record for most walks in an inning in an 8-2 win over the Chicago Cubs. The Reds walked nine times in the inning, the first five consecutively, and scored seven runs on one hit. Research into whose record the Reds broke was inconclusive and the major league record is eleven, by the New York Yankees against the Washington Senators in 1949. – Editor’s Note: the record is listed under the Team Batting section, and not the Team Pitching section.

In 1976 – Emmylou Harris is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week with Together Again. It was the first of seven #1 country hits for Harris and her second of 27 Top 10 hits. In 1964 Buck Owens went #1 country with the song and in 1966 Ray Charles hit both the Hot 100 and soul chart with it, making it one of the few songs to hit on all three major Billboard singles chart.
