…the rock bottom price we were authorized to offer was $500, a figure which leads people to wonder if the broad is really that hot or if the car wouldn’t be an acceptable option for their night’s rest.

In 1951 – The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution is ratified, following approval by the Minnesota legislature. The amendment limits presidents to two terms and it also applies to presidents who have served more than one-half of someone else’s term. Congress had sent the amendment to the several states in 1947, with Maine and Michigan the first states to ratify it, on March 31. The amendment was rejected by Oklahoma and Massachusetts.

In 1959 – Bob Cousy of the Boston Celtics establishes a new NBA record for most assists in a game in a 173-139 win over the Minneapolis Lakers. Cousy had 28 assists, breaking the record of 22 by Oscar Robertson in October 1961, the record was broken in February 1978 by Kevin Porter (29), and is now held by Scott Skiles (30, December 1990). Cousy also had 31 points and five rebounds in the game.

In 1971 –Pearl by Janis Joplin is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the first of nine consecutive weeks. It was Joplin’s second and final studio album as a solo act – she had died three months prior to its release – and remains her only #1. The album also went to #1 in four other countries, including Canada and Norway, and peaked at #20 in Great Britain. The album produced three hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including the #1 Me & Bobby McGee.

There was a note in the log book tonite concerning a Toyota Tundra that had evidently overstayed its welcome in the parking lot…You might think that hotels like ours keep tabs on their parking lots, and perhaps some do, but I’ve never worked at one that does…Evidently, tho, Mr Tundra has been there for a while.

In 1836 – Samuel Colt is granted US patent #X9430 for his revolver firearm. Sales were slow at first, though there were some sales during the war with the Seminole Indians, sales really didn’t pick up until the Mexican-American War in 1846, when it also became a popular military and civilian sidearm. Colt served briefly as a colonel in the Connecticutt militia in the Civil War and died in 1862.

In 1964 – Muhammed Ali – then known as Cassius Clay – wins the world’s heavyweight boxing title when champion Sonny Liston does not answer the bell for the seventh round in Miami Beach. It was the first of three heavyweight titles for Ali and remains the only title for Liston, who had won it by defeating Floyd Patterson in 1962. Ali would win the rematch in May 1965.

Today – Mylie Cyrus is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the fifth consecutive week with Flowers. It’s the 19th Top 40 hit for Cyrus, her tenth Top 10 hit, and her second #1 song. The song has gone to #1 in what is believed to be a record 50 countries, including Vietnam, Norway, and Great Britain, and is also in its fifth consecutive week at #1 on Billboard’s Global 200 chart. The song debuted at #1 on the Hot 100 on January 28, a once-rare occurrence that due to modern technology and data-gathering techniques no longer has any statistical significance.

In 1455 – The first Gutenberg Bible – a landmark event in Western civilization – is printed in Mainz, Germany by Johannes Gutenberg. Gutenberg also developed an oil-based ink that adhered better to his metal type and 49 copies of his Bible are known to exist today. Movable type first appeared in China in the 11th century AD and the oldest extant moveable type book dates from 1377 in Korea.

In 1980 – Eric Heiden of the US establishes a new world record in the 10,000-meters speed skating event at the Lake Placid Winter Games. Heiden won in 14 minutes, 28.13 seconds, to break the record of 14:34.33, established by Viktor Lyoskin of the Soviet Union in 1977. It was the fifth and final gold medal of the Lake Placid Games for Heiden, and he remains the only athlete to win five gold medals at a single Winter Games. The current world record is 12:30.74 done at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics by Nils van der Poel of Sweeden.

In 1985 – Mel McDaniel is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week with Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On. It was the 26th country hit for McDaniel and remains his only #1. The song also went #1 country in Canada and was Billboard’s 12th-biggest country song of the year. The song was originally given to Conway Twitty, who thought John Anderson would be better suited for it, but Anderson had no idea who sent it to him and turned it down.
