The Diary of a Nobody/February 25

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Yay for Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.

Saturday, February 25
There was a note in the log book tonite concerning a Toyota Tundra that had evidently overstayed its welcome in the parking lot…You might think that hotels like ours keep tabs on their parking lots, and perhaps some do, but I’ve never worked at one that does…Evidently, tho, Mr Tundra has been there for a while.

The hammer was laid down by Assistant Front Desk Manager Q and the logbook entry said “Per Q, the black Toyota Tundra must be moved today, the “Per Q” necessary because Q plainly cannot be bothered with trivialities like writing things in logbooks; he has trucks to tow and other command functions to attend to and this is plainly a raw display of his assistant front desk manager authority…It remains to be seen whether this is a power grab (PG) by Q and if he’ll start poaching on front desk manager responsibilities like scheduling and whatnot.

About 0100 a lady calls advising she believes she left her purse in the restaurant…She describes it and we go look and we have access to the manager’s office, and while it took a bit to find the lost and found drawer, the purse in there wasn’t hers…Not only did it not match the provided description, but the name on the ID didn’t match…So we go back and report this and she says she was certain she left it in there, and could we go check where she sat???…All right…The restaurant is thoroughly cleaned after closing and it would’ve been spotted, but we note where she sat and go and look and it’s not there, either…This doesn’t bode well for her purse still being in the restaurant, but we tell her it’s entirely possible they put it somewhere else and to call back in the morning.

We were pretty strong tonite, considering we’d been up for almost 24 hours once we reported for duty because we blew off the Friday nap (FN) for a date with Carolyn…Things took a little longer than usual because we weren’t in the mood to move with a whole lot of alacrity, but we hardly yawned at all and didn’t really hit the wall until 0500…The nite’s work was all done and project work was dispensed with and we just watched stuff until the end.

The big news is the new girl Gina had been joining Tammy on Saturday mornings at 0700…This is news because, of course, we had relieved Gina eight hours prior…She said she doesn’t mind, she appreciated the extra hours and she gets a four or five hours of sleep and that seems to do her.

Gina also said it is going to be a while before her cleaning service is up and running…Recall we had said we had work for her at The Shire…A lot of work…But her plan to open in the spring is no longer a thing, so we’ll have to find someone else.

We were able to use one of our fave lines – “nonsense, I’m here to serve you” – tonite…Swing shift had put a rollaway in 107 and they arrived a couple of hours into the shift and a bit later a kid was at the front desk with the rollaway saying they didn’t need it…I said OK, I’ll take care of it and he offered to take it someplace himself:

Nonsense…I’ll take care of it…I’m here to serve you.

As usually happens when we say this, the guests got a surprised look on their face, as if no one had ever told them they were here to serve them before.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0800 Saturday until 2000 Sunday…12.0 for the day and 50.0 hours for the week, an excellent total considering we blew off the Friday nap (FN) for the date with Carolyn…The big news tho, is we slept strait thru with no waking up to use the can, the first time we’ve slept that long without interruption since the Reagan Administration…God bless all of you.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
