The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow (again) deals with idiots who do not ring the bell. Today’s Diary.

I don’t understand this at all…Sure, the bell is actually a doorbell and may not stand out like the goddamn Liberty Bell, but it’s on the base of a large sign for Pete’s sake and Stevie Wonder could probably find it…

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1819 – The Adams-Onis Treaty between the US and Spain takes effect, in which Spain sells Florida to the US for $5 million (about $117 million in today’s money) in exchange for settling boundary disputes between the two countries in what is now western America. Spain was having trouble settling and defending the territory and ceded all of Florida, plus southern portions of Alabama and Mississippi, as well as eastern Louisiana.

In 1893 – Alabama and Auburn meet in football for the first time, with Auburn winning 32-22 at Lakewood Park in Birmingham. The series was not played between 1908 and 1947 and Alabama leads the series 49-37-1 and they have won the last three games in the series. The term Iron Bowl was coined in the 1950s and whether the first meeting ended the 1892 season or began the 1893 season was disputed by both schools.

In 1953 – Teresa Brewer is at #1 in Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart – a predecessor to the Hot 100 – for the second of five consecutive weeks with Till I Waltz With You Again. It was the sixth of 36 singles on assorted Billboard pop charts of the era for Brewer and her second and final #1 (Music, Music, Music, four weeks, 1950). The song was also in its second of six weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Most Played by Jockeys and Most Played in Juke Boxes charts.

Notes from around the human experience.

ALREADY WITH THE DRY, TECHNICAL MATTER: Regular readers of this crap know that recently we experimented with a video version of The Daily Dose. They will also notice that it has been dropped, despite some more or less positive feedback.

Please Pass The Dry, Technical Matter: Like a lot of inspiration, the inspiration for The Video Daily Dose hit out of the blue. And, also par for the inspiration course, when it did hit we thought it was so logical we cursed ourselves for not thinking of it before because who knows what artistic heights and untold riches we had deprived ourselves of.

Shoot Me…Just Shoot Me: And, of course, it cemented The Daily Dose as a technological juggernaut. And they really weren’t that difficult to produce once the original template was done. This took some time, because the technical aspects are as, well, technical as they are dull, but we rathered enjoyed the work.

Fly In The Ointment: The problem was, though, we found we had to shorten the popular On This Date segment in order for all three items to fit on one screen. We didn’t mind this at first but, boy, writing On This Date is a highlight of our day, and writing the truncated version simply wasn’t as much fun as writing the longer version.

The Bottom Line: So it was adios to the video version and welcome back to the old one. While, like you, we enjoy the occasional whiteboard video, we’re writers and not video makers here at The Daily Dose, so you are again obliged to read this feature instead of watch it

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow has a day off from the veterans service office (VSO). Today’s Diary.

It was a day off from the veterans service office (VSO) today and we debated how best to spend the morning off and – in what is not being hailed as the Upset of the Year – we spent it at home, in the chair, reading…We weren’t all that tired and thought about going to the gym, but thanks to 24-hour access at the small town gym (STG) we’re getting four lifting sessions in a week now and that’s enuff.

In 1945 – Japanese kamikaze pilots sink the US aircraft carriers Bismark Sea and the Saratoga during the Battle of Iwo Jima in the South Pacific. The battle had begun on the 19th and would end in an American victory on March 26. The raising of the American flag by six United States Marines on Mount Suribachi captured in the iconic photograph was taken on February 23 and remains one of History’s most reproduced photographs.

In 1953 – The Niagara Purple Eagles and the Siena Saints establish a new NCAA record for the longest game in an 88-81, six-overtime Niagara victory at the Washington Ave. Armory in Albany, New York. The game was tied 54-54 at the end of regulation and broke the record of five overtimes done at least twice previously. The mark was tied twice before being broken by Cincinnati/Bradley’s seven-overtime game in 1981. Seven overtimes is also the Division II and III record.

In 1981 – REO Speedwagon is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the first of 15 non-consecutive weeks with Hi Infidelity. It was the seventh of eleven chart albums for the group and remains their only #1. The album also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #6 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s #1 album of the year and its 39th-biggest of 1982. The album produced four Hot 100 hits, including the #1 Keep On Loving You.

The Diary of a Nobody – At the hotel, Sparrow deals with a chick sleeping in a stairwell. Today’s Diary.

She was not easy to wake up…We started off kicking the bottom of her boots, which were facing us…This is a good option because you can kick with some authority without causing injury and, if she’s the type who attacks when startled, she can’t do any damage to you…This did not produce the desired results; it only stirred her somewhat, and we ended up nudging her in the back…
