Writing worth reading. Usually.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow (again) deals with idiots who do not ring the bell. Today’s Diary.

I don’t understand this at all…Sure, the bell is actually a doorbell and may not stand out like the goddamn Liberty Bell, but it’s on the base of a large sign for Pete’s sake and Stevie Wonder could probably find it…

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1819 – The Adams-Onis Treaty between the US and Spain takes effect, in which Spain sells Florida to the US for $5 million (about $117 million in today’s money) in exchange for settling boundary disputes between the two countries in what is now western America. Spain was having trouble settling and defending the territory and ceded all of Florida, plus southern portions of Alabama and Mississippi, as well as eastern Louisiana.

In 1893 – Alabama and Auburn meet in football for the first time, with Auburn winning 32-22 at Lakewood Park in Birmingham. The series was not played between 1908 and 1947 and Alabama leads the series 49-37-1 and they have won the last three games in the series. The term Iron Bowl was coined in the 1950s and whether the first meeting ended the 1892 season or began the 1893 season was disputed by both schools.

In 1953 – Teresa Brewer is at #1 in Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart – a predecessor to the Hot 100 – for the second of five consecutive weeks with Till I Waltz With You Again. It was the sixth of 36 singles on assorted Billboard pop charts of the era for Brewer and her second and final #1 (Music, Music, Music, four weeks, 1950). The song was also in its second of six weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Most Played by Jockeys and Most Played in Juke Boxes charts.
