Give me an R! It’s Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.
It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Saturday, November 19 The big news at the hotel is that that heavy-duty styrofoam board at the doorway that leads to the being-remodeled lobby that replaced that taped-up sheeting is, triumphantly, still up…(Really, whoever came up with that idea should be given a generous government pension because it was sheer genius.)…It really came in handy tonite because it was brutally cold and ol’ Sparrow was able to get the #2 key from Amy and duck into the lobby and get to the back office without having to go back outside.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow laments the recent lack accurate weather forecasts. Today’s Diary.
Boy, the weatherman is really blowing it so far in the snow forecasting department, with “no snow” apparently now code for “tons of snow”…This utter incompetence led yours truly to be tardy for his usual Friday morning workout…

In 1863 – President Abraham Lincoln delivers one of mankind’s seminal speeches, the Gettysburg Address. at the dedication of the Soldier’s National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Five handwritten copies of the speech remain, all a bit different, and History is not entirely sure which one, if any, was read at the ceremony as all five versions differ from the account offered by the Associated Press reporter who was there. At just over two minutes, it was one hour and 58 minutes shorter than the opening speech by noted American statesman Edward Everett, a speech that was generally better received than Lincoln’s.
In 1995 – The Baltimore Stallions win the CFL’s Grey Cup, defeating the Calgary Stampede 37-20 at Taylor Field in Regina, Saskatchewan. The Stallions had won the South Division with a 15-3 record and had defeated Winnipeg and San Antonio in the playoffs. The CFL had American teams for three seasons, from 1993-95 and the Stallions remain the only US team to win the Grey Cup.
In 1949 – Frankie Laine is at #1 on Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart – a predecessor to the Hot 100 – for the eighth and final consecutive weeks with That Lucky Old Sun. It was the fourth of 38 hits on a Billboard pop chart for Laine and his first of three #1s. His second #1, Mule Train, followed That Lucky Old Sun at #1, spending six weeks on the top. Versions of the song by Frank Sinatra and Vaughn Monroe also hit Billboard pop charts in 1949.

While filling out the paperwork we actually had to tell him “Look, please stop talking, I’m working” which had about the same effect as telling a river to reverse course…

In 1970 – US Army Lieutenant William Calley goes on trial on 22 charges of murder in connection with what History refers to as the Mai Lai Massacre, a slaughter of several hundred unarmed Vietnamese by US forces. Calley would be convicted and sentenced to life in prison at hard labor, though three days after his conviction President Nixon released him to house arrest. An order for a new trial was overturned by the Supreme Court, and Calley was paroled after three years. Calley was one of 26 arrested in the massacre, but the only one convicted. Now 79, he was last reported to be living in Atlanta.
In 1883 – Willie Fernie of Scotland defeats Bob Ferguson, also of Scotland, by one stroke in a 36-hole playoff to win the British Open at Musselburgh Links in Scotland. It was the only major title for Fernie and followed three consecutive Open wins by Ferguson. Both regulation play the day before and the playoff consisted of four nine-hole rounds. Fernie earned £8 for the win, about $1,365 in today’s money.
In 1984 – Wham! Is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go. It was the second chart single for the group, their first of nine Top 10 hits – a figure which includes Christmas releases in 2020 and 2021 – was their first of three #1 songs. The song went to #1 in nine other countries including Iceland, Norway, and Great Britain, and due its charting primarily in the 1985 survey period, was Billboard’s third-biggest song of 1985.
