The Daily Dose/November 6, 2022
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. NHL Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters aren’t paying any more attention to the NHL than you are, but were dismayed to note that divisional rivals are only playing three (3) or four (4) games against each other, a great way to lessen rivalries…As an example, Calgary has already made their only trip to Edmonton for the season and they play their last game against each other on December 27.

2. World Series TV RatingsStill in the tank, as 2022 World Series average of 11.6 million viewers the third-lowest ever, behind 2021 and 2021…This is only 45 million or so less than tuned into Game 7 of the 1986 World Series…Your game is still dying.

3. USA! USA! The 3-hole staple…The midterms are Tuesday, with Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “pretty sure” this will merely be another nail in America’s coffin…Despite the fact there will be no evidence of tampering, GOP will dismiss all results they disagree with…America circling the drain now, perhaps making it until this half-century is out or perhaps not…When we are no longer able to govern ourselves, someone will come in and do it for us.

4. Kyrie Irving Good gravy, Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “strongly suspect” he might be the biggest hot mess in an era filled with them…He is so talented though that even if the Nets give up on him, some other desperate team will give him a chance.

The Diary of a Nobody – At the hotel, Sparrow has to rustle up a heater. Today’s Diary.

It didn’t look good at first…First, we checked the housekeeping room behind guest laundry with no luck, and then the housekeeping office and laundry room didn’t produce one, either, and neither did the storeroom next to 102…Triple crap because now we’re running out of options, but we managed to find one upstairs, in the storeroom next to 201…Whew, because there is no way you can song and dance your way out of this puppy…

In 1947 – Meet the Press debuts on NBC television. The first host was creator Martha Rountree and the first guest was former Postmaster General James Farley. The show originated two years earlier as American Mercury Presents Meet the Press on the Mutual Radio Network and in 1975 became the first network news show to host the president of the United States when Gerald Ford was a gust. Outside of annual live coverage of Wimbledon and the Lord Mayor’s Show in Great Britain, it is the longest-running show in television history.

In 1869 – Rutgers College defeats the College of New Jersey – now Princeton University – 6-4 in what is regarded as the first college football game ever played. The game more resembled soccer than the game we know today, as teams tried to kick the ball into the other team’s goal. Each side had 25 players, the ball was round and running the ball was illegal. Princeton won the rematch a week later 8-0, though an anticipated third game was never played due to concerns the students cared more about the game than studying. The site of the game is now a Rutgers gymnasium and the last surviving member of the game, George Large of Rutgers, died in 1935.

In 1982 – Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with Up Where We Belong. The song was the first of two #1s for Warnes in the US, while it remains Cocker’s only #1 song in America. The song was from the soundtrack to the movie An Officer and a Gentleman and also went to #1 in South Africa, Canada, and Australia, and peaked at #7 in Cocker’s native Great Britain. It won both singers the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group,

The Diary of a Nobody/November 5

It’s Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, November 5
Mr W was at the door when we reported for duty…Recall he’s the one who a while back got drunk here tho he wasn’t staying here and left his wallet and keys in the lobby and later his boss called wondering why he hadn’t come to work and we later saw him crawling out of the window of his car.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow’s running into cat food supply chain issues.

…the fly in the ointment is for the past three weeks or so they’ve been out of the boxed canned yummies designed for senior cats…Now, they do have individual cans of senior yummies, but it’s only one flavor (tho the flavor appears to rotate, today it was some beef stuff, last time chicken) so we mix it up with some non-senior yummies that she likes.

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 2009 – The deadliest mass shooting at a US military installation occurs when Army Major Nidal Hasan kills 13 and wounds 22 at Fort Hood in central Texas. Hasan was an Army psychiatrist and though he had been in email contact with a known terror threat, he was judged not to be a threat by the FBI. Hasan himself was shot several times and remains paralyzed from the waist down and he was court-martialed in 2013, found guilty, condemned to death, and is currently incarcerated at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Before earning a commission, Hasan had enlisted in the Army in 1988.

In 1927 – Walter Hagen wins the PGA Championship, 1 up (meaning he won one more hole than his opponent) over Joe Turnesa at the Cedar Crest Country Club in Dallas. It was the fourth consecutive and fifth and final PGA title for Hagen and was his ninth of eleven major championships and was the highest finish in a major for Turnesa. Hagen’s total of 58 tour wins is still good for eighth on the all-time PGA list and this remains the only major hosted by Cedar Crest.

Today – Taylor Swift is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first week with Anti-Hero and establishes Hot 100 records by simultaneously occupying all ten positions in the Top 10, with ten Top 10 singles from one album also establishing a new Hot 100 record. The previous record for most songs in the Top 10 simultaneously was nine by Drake in September 2021. All 20 songs from Swift’s latest album Midnights are in the Hot 100 this week, with the lowest-ranked song at #45. It is the ninth #1 song for Swift and she now has 40 top 10 hits, a total good for second on the all-time list, behind Drake’s 59. – Editor’s Note: This story actually broke earlier this week, but new Billboard charts officially run on Saturday, so this is the first day Anti-Hero has been at #1.

Quality is achieving and reaching for the highest standard as against being satisfied with the sloppy or fraudulent. It is honesty of purpose as against catering to cheap or sensational sentiment. It does not allow compromise with the second rate.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow runs some errands. Today’s Diary.

As long as we were out, we also checked the mail and stopped by the town hall to pay the utility bill, nicely over $200 because apparently, we forgot to pay it last month…The big news is my new Legion cap was in the mail…It was a gratuitous purchase because we didn’t really need a new one, but we wanted one that had “Past Commander” stitched on one side as if everyone in the goddamned post doesn’t already know ol’ Sparrow served six terms as commander.

In 1979 – The United States embassy in Tehran is overrun by Iranian college students. The students took 52 diplomats and citizens hostage while six diplomats who evaded capture were rescued in January and in April an attempt by US forces to rescue the hostages failed. Previous attempts to take the embassy had occurred in January and September and the hostages spent 444 days in captivity and were released shortly after President Ronald Reagan’s inauguration on January 20.

In 1934 – The Detroit Lions and the Pittsburgh Pirates establish a new NFL record for most rushing yards in a game in a 40-7 Lions victory at University of Detroit Stadium. The teams combined for 426 rushing yards and broke the record of 420 yards established by the Boston Redskins and the New York Giants in 1933 and the record still stands. The Pirates would become the Steelers in 1940 and the University of Detroit – now Detroit Mercy – stopped playing football in 1964.

In 1972 – Johnny Nash is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of four consecutive weeks with I Can See Clearly Now. I was the sixth of eleven chart singles for Nash, his fourth of five top 40 hits, and remains his only #1 song. The song also went to #1 in South Africa and Canada, peaked at 35 in Great Britain, and at #38 on Billboard’s soul chart. The song has been covered many times, last hit the Hot 100 in 1994 when a version by Jimmy Cliff peaked at #18, and is one of the few songs that has appeared on Billboard’s pop, soul, and country charts.

The sportsman trains himself and primes for his particular game. He prays for it, and so he gets it. After due…and long preparation…he goes out…{to a place where} most of his townsmen never saw nor dreamed of…He had them halfway in his bag when he started, he has only to shove them down.
Henry David Thoreau

In 361 – Roman Emperor Constantius II dies of a fever in what was then the Roman province of Cilicia and what is now southern Turkey. Constantius had assumed the throne after the death of his father in 337 and consolidated power after massacring his father-in-law, an uncle, and several cousins. He spent most of his reign involved in both border and civil wars and his only daughter, Flavia Maxima Constantina, was born posthumously. He was succeeded by his cousin Julian.

In 1969 – The New Orleans Saints and the St Louis Cardinals establish a new NFL record for most touchdown passes in a game in a 51-42 Saints victory. Billy Kilmer of the Saints and Charlie Johnson of the Cardinals each threw six touchdown passes and the twelve combined touchdown passes broke the record of eleven which had been done twice previously and the record is now 13, done by the Saints and the New York Giants in 2015.

In 1990 – Vanilla Ice is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Ice Ice Baby. It was the first of four chart singles for Vanilla Ice, his first of two Top 40 hits, and remains his only #1 song. The song went to #1 in six other countries including the Netherlands, Zimbabwe, and Great Britain, and peaked at #6 on Billboard’s soul chart. The song was originally released as the B side to the single Play That Funky Music, which would peak at #4 on the Hot 100 the following February.
