The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow gets a voicemail at the VSO. Today’s Diary.
Anyway, the point of her second message was that the VSO there was taking care of her and it would be OK if my office ceased all efforts on her behalf, easy enuff to do because we had no efforts on her behalf to cease.
The Bottom Ten/NCAA Week 10 – Akron still sets the pace in the race for the ESPNCup – symbolic of NCAA Bottom Ten excellence.
Coaching staff – looking to instill discipline required for B-10 stretch run – takes offense out behind locker rooms for postgame beatings because despite producing three (3) turnovers offense hasn’t posted a shutout since game two…
…naming rights for Wildcat’s new stadium still figure to be out of B-10 pollster’s price range, with B-10 staffers now looking into forking over a few bucks for getting an extra pair cleats named after them or something.
Minutemen can capture coveted B-10 hardware like John Adams Spitoon – symbolic of Yankee football ineptitude – and Thomas Jefferson Quill – issued to worst team in original 13 (13) colonies – with loss to UConn this week.

In 1503 – Pope Julius II is elected in one of the shortest conclaves on record, less than ten hours. Born Giuliano della Rovere, Julius replaced Pius III and would reign until his death in 1513. In 1508 Julius commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel, a commission Michelangelo initially wanted to decline because he considered himself a sculptor and not a painter. Julius had one daughter (Felice della Rovere, born c. 1483) and died in 1513.
In 2003 – John Gagliardi of St John’s University in Minnesota tied the NCAA all-division record for most wins by a coach in a 15-12 win over St Thomas College. It was the 408th career win for Gagliardi, tying the record established by Eddie Robinson from 1941-97. Gagliardi retired in 2012 with 489 career wins, an NCAA record that still stands. Gagliardi won NAIA national titles in 1963 and 1965 and NCAA Division III titles in 1976 and 2003.
In 1975 – Jefferson Starship is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the third of four non-consecutive weeks with Red Octopus. It was the fourth of seven Top 10 albums for the group and remains their only #1 in a chart career that began in 1966 as the Jefferson Airplane and ended in 1989 as Starship. The album produced two chart singles, including the Top 10 Miracles.

In 1941 – Mount Rushmore – a national monument in the Black Hills of South Dakota – is completed after 14 years of construction. The monument consists of 60-foot-high sculptures of presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, selected by the project’s leader, American sculptor Gutzon Borglum. A lack of funding prevented the original plan, the presidents depicted from the waist up, from being completed and the last carver from the project died in 2019.
In 1943 – Sammy Baugh of the Washington Redskins establish a new NFL record for most touchdown passes in a game in a 48-10 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers. Baugh threw for six touchdowns to break the record of five that had been done twice previously and the record was broken two weeks later by Sid Luckman of the Chicago Bears who had seven and the mark has been tied several times since. The Dodgers left the NFL after the 1944 season.
1960 – The Drifters are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of three non-consecutive weeks with Save the Last Dance For Me. The song was also in its only week at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart and also went to #1 in New Zealand and South Africa, peaked at #2 in Great Britain and remains their only #1 song. In 1984 a version of the song by Dolly Parton peaked at #4 on Billboard’s country chart, making Save the Last Dance For Me one of the few songs to chart on all three of Billboard’s major singles charts.

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.
1. World Series I – Thanks guys for making us – or, more accurately, those who still care – wait five (5) days for the World Series to start…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “pretty sure” this was a great way to kill interest in every place other than Houston and Philadelphia.
2. World Series II – Baseball fan(s) everywhere anxiously waiting to see which will get more viewers, This Week in Australian Rules Football or Game 1 of the World Series…The 2021 Series averaged only 11.7 million viewers, which was actually up from the 2020’s all-time low of 9.7 million viewers….This means 320 million Americans – about 96 percent – didn’t watch the World Series last year…In 1976, roughly 20 percent of US watched the World Series.
3. USA! USA! – The 3-hole staple…The midterms are coming up with lawsuits already well underway for a country that can no longer hold proper elections…There will come a time – probably before this half-century is out – when America will no longer be able to govern herself and someone will come in and do it for us.
4. World Series III – Baseball’s lost hold on US transcending all demographics as 2022 World Series the first since 1950 without an American-born Black on either roster.
5. The Man in the Iron Mask by Josephine Wilkenson – One heck of a read shows that noted prisoner wasn’t related to King Louis XIV and that shows no one of consequence went missing when prisoner was arrested…He was a valet – likely to a French aristocrat – who knew some things Louis didn’t want blabbed…Mask – alternately described as iron, steel, and velvet – wasn’t worn all the time, either…Dull, technical types will appreciate in-depth look at 17th-century French penology in action.

In 1270 – The Eighth (and penultimate) Crusade ends with the Treaty of Tunis, agreed to by Charles of Anjou and Hafsid Sultan Muhammed I al-Mustansire. There was little actual fighting in this Crusade, as King Louis IX of France died shortly after arriving in Tunisia. Louis had also started the Seventh Crusade (1248-1254) which ended with his capture by the Muslims. The Crusades, an attempt by assorted Europeans to reclaim the Holy Land from the Muslims, began in 1095 and ended in 1291.
In 1871 – The Athletics of Philadelphia win the first National Association (NA) pennant – the first professional baseball title in the US – defeating the Chicago White Stockings 4-1. The Athletics finished the season with a 21-7 record, finishing two games ahead of both the White Stockings and the Boston Red Stockings. The NA suffered from teams leaving during the season and some not making certain road trips and their marks are not included in the major league record book. The Red Stockings, now the Atlanta Braves, are the only NA team that has played every year since 1871.
In 2004 – Usher and Alicia Keys are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of six consecutive weeks with My Boo. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #5 in Great Britain, was in its second of three consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, was Billboard’s 24th-biggest hit of 2004, its 54th-biggest of 2005, and won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. It was the seventh of eight #1 songs for Usher and the second of four #1s for Keys.

In 1901 – Leon Czolgosz, the assassin of President William McKinley, is executed at Auburn State Prison in central New York. Czolgosz was electrocuted with three jolts of 1,800 volts each a mere 54 days after he’d shot McKinley in Buffalo and 46 days after he’d died. Czolgosz was originally from Detroit and was a steelworker by trade and an avowed anarchist. An autopsy showed Czolgosz had a normal brain, bad teeth and a case of the clap.
In 1950 – Marion Motley of the Cleveland Browns establishes a new NFL record for the highest rushing average in a game in a 45-7 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Motley rushed for 188 yards on 11 carries – including rushing touchdowns of 33 and 69 yards – for an average of 17.09 yards-per-carry (ypc), breaking the record of 16.7 ypc established by Billy Grimes of Green Bay three weeks earlier. The record is now 17.30 ypc done by Michael Vick of the Atlanta Falcons in 2002. The record is based on a minimum of ten rushing attempts.
In 1983 – Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the first of two consecutive weeks with Islands in the Stream. It was the second and final #1 song on the Hot 100 for both Rogers and Parton and their 12th and 13th #1 country hits respectively. The song also went to #1 in Canada, Austria, and Australia, peaked at #7 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s #1 country hit of the year and due to when it charted was Billboard’s 56th-biggest hit of 1984. The song was written by the Bee Gees.
