The Diary of a Nobody/October 29

Of course it’s Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, October 29
It turns out the hotel’s new owners – who don’t take over until the first of the year – are not the ones who own the hotel and ski area on the mountain…They’re a large company out of the South and this will be their first hotel in this state…They are not making a good first impression.

There was a group text today to all front deskers from Front Desk Manager Brandon announcing everyone had to be at a mandatory meeting called by the new owners at 1100 Tuesday…This is rather cheeky of them and made me think the era of this being a nice, family place to work is about to vanish and yours truly has sufficient contrarian in him not to go just for funsies…But we thought about and some sleep Monday and we can work out Tuesday morning then go to the meeting with little hassle, a plan we immediately approved because ol’ Sparrow has more get-along in him than contrarian.

Then someone who turned out to be Mark noted that some of us have other jobs and simply cannot be called in at random times…Ol’ Sparrow contributed two cents, noting this was true and that while we could make this one (we can work out in the morning and sleep after the meeting) there may very well be times when we are unable to make a mandatory meetings_

(Calling meetings mandatory is risky for anyone but a dictator…We learned this sports officiating when people would call “mandatory” meetings then be stuck when people don’t show up…What are they going to do, not assign the 25 percent of the association that didn’t show up.)

Later, Brandon called me and said he realized ol’ Sparrow might not be able to make every mandatory meeting that will be coming up in the next few weeks and that this point was made to the new owners…Brandon noted he had to reapply for his job, to include updated resume and background check and brother, we gotta be honest, we checked on the night auditor want ads and there are a couple, but that was rather rash and, as we told Assistant Front Desk Manager Q, there is no reason to go jumping off bridges before we get to them.

Speaking of Q, we were at the hotel a couple of hours early after working out Friday nite and we were in the back office when an alarm goes off…Not THEE ALARM which wakes everyone in a one thousand yard radius up, but merely a beep on the new alarm panel…Rather selfishly, tho sensibly, we want this taken care of before we clock in, so we head over to the New Front Desk Area (NFDA) to tell Q about it…We return to the back office and Q presses the Acknowledge button, which spits out some code about what is wrong…He has no more idea what it means that I do, so he calls Brandon and Brandon knows and says it’s nothing important, just some dust on a sensor somewhere and we could silence it without worrying.

There are some youth hockey teams in-house and regular readers of this crap know hockey parents love to hang out in the lobby but, of course, there’s no lobby right now thanks to the renovation, so they were stuck in the small hallway leading to the guest rooms which features a bench and a ledge for a large window to sit on…This didn’t stop them, tho…A blizzard wouldn’t have stopped them…And the bad part was they are in close proximity to the NFDA and you can hear every boring, tedious word and, as in the past, this weekend’s game are probably the biggest ever, outside of the Olympics.

We did some laundry so we’d have clean workout gear for tonite’s workout, but we set the alarm for 2130 in case there were eleven hours of sleep waiting for us…There wasn’t…Or, rather, there might’ve been but, eventually, we decided to get a workout in.

Recall we long ago established that we are as strong on Day 2 as we were on Day 1, but that strength tended to diminish on Day 3…On the other hand, we’ve done Thursday/Friday /Saturday workouts for the past month with good strength but recall we had a full sleep Thursday nite, the Friday nap (FN), and the Saturday Sleep Session (SSS)…This week we only had Thursday nite and Friday day/afternoon sleep sessions…But we are taking good supplements, so we thought we’d get up and head in.

It wasn’t easy getting out of bed, tho…We were up about 1745 or so – a great time for getting into the gym – but we farted around…We told ourselves we were weary but then we told ourselves we’re not taking world-class pre- and post-workout supplements so we could execute better Sparrow Rollovers (SROs) in the sack…But then the cat hopped on our back and, in time, snuck her nose into an ear and started purring, which is utterly adorable, and that seemed to seal the deal for staying in bed.

Then it occurred to ol’ Sparrow he was negotiating with himself, never a useful tactic because you always lose…We thought screw it, at the very worst tonite will be a field test that will prove three consecutive workouts is not productive but, on the other hand, it may prove it’s eminently doable.

We were strong today…Recall last time out on the squat machine we got six reps of 25 on each side done so today we cut it back to what we did previous to that: 15 on each side (really, a pathetically low weight, but we just started the squat machine) and we were able to move that ten times so so much for not being strong on three consecutive days…Shoulder side lateral raises were down 2.5 lbs, but hammer curls were still at 30 lbs, we benched 180 nine times on the final set and we were strong on the tricep machine so overall this was satisfactory strength…The only fly in the ointment was our self-negotiating session had us running behind, so the rest of the troika was dispensed with, tho we are reserving the right to come in for a soak Sunday morning after the hotel.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0900 Saturday until 1730 Saturday…8.5 hours for the day and 51.5 hours for the week.

The weekly average for October is 51.9, a triumphant total…God bless all of you.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
