Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1960 – An explosion in a Soviet ICBM that was being readied for a test explodes in what is now Kazakhstan. The explosion killed between an estimated 100 and 300 people, though no one knows for sure. The explosion was caused by a short circuit in the missile which caused the second-stage engine to explode. The first reports of the explosion were by the Italians in December and the Soviet government did not acknowledge the explosion until 1989. History refers to the incident at the Nedelin Catastrophe.

In 1959 – Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia Warriors makes his NBA debut and begins an NBA-record streak of consecutive games played without fouling out in a 118-109 win over the New York Knicks. Chamberlain would play his entire career of 1,045 games without disqualification, a record that was later broken by Moses Malone and Mark Jackson and is now held by Jamal Crawford with 1,327

In 1942 –The Billboard soul chart – then known as the Harlem Hit Parade – debuts with Andy Kirk & His Twelve Clouds of Joy at #1 for the only week with Take It and Git. The chart tracked songs that were popular in Harlem jukeboxes and Billboard would debut a best-sellers chart in 1948, an airplay chart in 1955, and its first unified soul chart in 1958. Today the chart is known as the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and the current #1 song is Bad Habit by Steve Lacy, now in its seventh week at #1. It is also in its third week at #1 on the Hot 100.

The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.

Men under the influence of interest or passion often delude themselves thoughtlessly and do not always acknowledge even to themselves the motives upon which they really act.

The Daily Dose/October 23, 2022
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. Liz Truss A conservative in name and a libertarian at heart, will now have the shortest tenure ever of a British prime minister…Tax cuts generally get economies moving, but only cutting taxes for the rich was the wrong policy at the wrong time when working-class Britons are wondering how they are going to pay their heating bills this winter.

2. New York Yankees Anytime evil Yankees – especially when managed by the whiny Aaron Boone – are losing the American League Championship Series three (3) games to none, life is (very) good…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters triumphantly noting this would/will be their fifth ALCS loss since their most recent AL pennant in 2009.

3. USA! USA! The current 3-hole staple…75 percent of kids are now too fat, stupid, or drug-addled to join Army…Citizens still earning marksmanship ribbons at record pace in America…Entire country circling wagons, unable to face any viewpoint not in step with their own…America remains far closer to the oblivion that awaits her than the prosperity she once knew, with Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “pretty sure” America has until half-century is out to show it can govern itself before someone comes in and does it for us.

4. Donald Trump The former 3-hole staple, triumphantly returns to survey…Us humans tend to reap what we sow, and when you sow hatred, ignorance, and discord you shouldn’t die of shock when the commission investigating the insurrection you instigated sends you a subpoena inviting you to discuss matters.

5. Fake News Click here to read news that some of the wizards around us were believing this week. Courtesy of AP.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow manages to get a workout in. Today’s Diary entry is on the house, thanks to the good folks at Read Free Sunday (RFS).

We know ourselves well enuff to know that more sleep probably wasn’t coming, tho, so we got up and were out the door in pretty good time and on the gym floor at 1915, ready to see what strength was there for us.

In 1942 – The Battle of Guadalcanal on the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific between US and Japanese forces begins. American forces had landed on the island in August and the first Japanese attempts to take the island began later in the month. The Battle of Guadalcanal lasted three days and resulted in an American victory. The US repulsed Japanese attempts to reinforce the island in a November naval battle and Japan had its remaining forces evacuated by February 1943.

In 1886 – The St Louis Browns of the American Association defeat the Chicago White Stockings – now the Cubs – of the National League 4-3 in ten innings to win the World Series four games to two. The Browns got three runs in the eighth to tie the game and won it on a wild pitch in the tenth. The Browns moved to the National League in 1892 and became the Cardinals in 1900.

In 1965 – The Toys are at #1 on the Cashbox Top 100 – one of several sources of American charted music over the years – for their only week with A Lover’s Concerto. It was the first of two chart singles for the Toys and remains their biggest hit. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #5 in Great Britain, and later peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and at #4 on their soul chart. The melody was based on the 18th-century keyboard piece Minuet in G major by German composer Christian Petzold that for many years was attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach.

In 1797 – Frenchman André-Jacques Garnerin becomes the first human to parachute from a high altitude in Paris. Garnerin took attached the parachute to a balloon and rose to a height of 3,300 feet before severing the parachute from the balloon. Garnerin had neglected to include a vent in the parachute and his descent was rather rough, but he landed uninjured. Two years later his wife Jeanne-Genevieve became the first woman to parachute and Mr Garnerin died in a ballooning accident in 1823.

In 2002 – Patrick Roy of the Colorado Avalanche ties the NHL record for most games by a goalie in a 3-3 tie against the Edmonton Oilers. It was the 971st game for Roy to tie the record established by Terry Sawchuck established with four teams from 1949-70. Roy would retire the following year with 1,029 games played and the record is now 1,266 games, established by Martin Brodeur with two teams from 1991-2015.

In 1988 – Phil Collins is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with Groovy Kind of Love. It was the twelfth of 21 Top 40 hits for Collins as a solo act, his eighth of 17 Top 10 hits, and his fifth of seven #1 songs. The song went to #1 in nine other countries including Denmark, Portugal, and Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 29th-biggest song of the year. The song was initially offered to Leslie Gore, whose producer rejected it, and in 1966 a version by the Mindbenders peaked at #2 on the Hot 100.

The Diary of a Nobody – At the hotel, Sparrow spends no small amount of time on the phone with tech support. Today’s Diary.

I answer it and it’s the gal from [Tech Support] wondering if I’ve got the proper credentials yet…God bless this woman…I do, indeed…I give her the front desk cell number and she calls me on that and we scoot back to the back office server room, log in again under GM Andy’s username and BOOM she is on it and the matter is resolved in a few minutes, only three hours after it first appeared.

The facility consists of five indoor venues and one outdoor facility, is 600 feet long and 394 feet wide at its widest point, and is as tall as a 22-story building. Construction had begun in 1958 and the opera house was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

In 1968 – The US women’s 4 x 100 meter relay team wins the gold medal and establishes a new world record at the Mexico City Summer Olympics. Margaret Bailes, Barbara Ferrell, Mildrette Netter, and Wyomia Tyus ran it in 42.88 seconds, to break the record of 43.4 seconds they had established – along with the Dutch – in the semifinals the day before and the record is now 40.82 seconds done by the US in 2012. Cuba and the Soviet Union won the silver and bronze medals

In 1990 – James Ingram is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with I Don’t Have the Heart. It was the eighth and final Top 40 hit for Ingram, his third Top 10 hit, and his second and final #1 song (Baby Come to Me, with Patti Austin, two weeks, 1983). The song also peaked at #53 on Billboard’s soul chart and spent 26 weeks on the Hot 100, including 15 weeks in the Top 40 and seven weeks in the Top 10. Ingram died in 2019 at age 66.
