It was partly this boldness and resilience that attracted men and women to Jackson’s side in the first place, for in doubtful moments people need someone who can reassure them amid danger.

The Diary of a Nobody – It’s a fairly busy day for Sparrow, though he does take time to have lunch. Today’s Diary.
Lunch was with Malea and Amanda from the Building Department…We went to a Mexican place owned by the hotel’s restaurant group that Amanda said had a satisfactory cleanliness rating, her main, perhaps sole, criteria for picking a restaurant…

In 2010 – Thirty-three coal miners – known to History as Los 33 – are rescued from a coal mine in northern Chile. Los 33 had spent 69 days trapped 2,300 feet underground and had made two days of emergency rations last 17 days, right up until they were discovered, eventually being rescued via a capsule being lowered through a tunnel bored for the purpose. The miners were generally in good health, though each had lost an average of 18 pounds. In 2013, the investigation into the disaster ended without any charges being filed. The ordeal had begun on August 5.
In 1903 – The Boston Americans – now the Red Sox – defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 at home to win the first World Series 5 games to 3. The Americans got the only runs they needed on a two-run single by Hobe Ferriss in the fourth inning and Bill Dinneen pitched his second shutout of the series, a record that is now held by Christy Matthewson, who pitched three shutouts in 1905. The first three games of the series were played in Boston, the next four in Pittsburgh, and a ninth game, if needed, would have also been played in Boston.
In 1984 – Stevie Wonder is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with I Just Called to Say I Love You. The song went to #1 in 16 other countries including Great Britain, Spain, and Denmark, and also went to #1 on Billboard’s soul chart. It was Billboard’s 25th biggest song of the year, the 73rd biggest of the decade, and ranked 370th on Billboard’s 60th-anniversary chart last year. The song was Wonder’s 40th Top 40 hit and his eighth of ten #1 songs. It was from the soundtrack to the movie The Women in Red.

In 539 BC – The second Babylonian Empire comes to an end when the Persian Army led by Cyrus the Great of Persia defeats an army led by Nabonidus. History is unclear whether Cyrus entered Babylon as a liberator or conqueror, though writings suggest that Cyrus treated Nabonidus graciously and allowed him to retire. Babylon’s ruins, now a UN World Heritage Site, lay in central Iraq, a bit south of Baghdad and a previous Babylonian empire had flourished in the 19th or 18th century BC.
In 1853 – John Morrisey wins the American heavyweight boxing title, defeating Yankee Sullivan in a 37-round decision in Boston Corner, then in Massachusetts, now in eastern New York. Accounts generally agree that Sullivan was winning when a riot ensued and the referee awarded the win to Morrisey and under rules of the era, a round ended when a fighter fell down and the fight lasted around 55 minutes. Morrisey would later have murder charges dropped after three trials resulted in hung juries and he later served in the US House and New York state senate.
In 1985 – Ready For the World is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with Oh Sheila. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #50 in Great Britain, and earlier had spent two consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart. It was the first of three Top 40 hits for the group, remains their only #1 song, and spent 21 weeks on the chart, including 13 weeks in the Top 40 and six weeks in the Top 10. Due to a variety of similarities, the song is sometimes attributed to Prince

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow is reminded of his days washing dishes in Navy boot camp. Today’s Diary.
It was long, tedious work and we despised every minute of it (tho for the first couple of days it was a treat being out of the boot camp routine) and one thing we remember is the entire scullery had to look just like it was about to be used for the first time and that jerk petty officer’s last name must’ve been Lysol or something because it was never good enuff the first, second, or third time…

In 1958 – Pioneer I – the United States’ first space probe – lifts off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on a mission to orbit the moon. The mission failed, as assorted errors caused Pioneer 1 to reach an altitude of only about 70,000, about one-third of the way to the moon. The spacecraft returned to Earth 43 hours later, burning up upon reentry over the South Pacific Ocean.
In 2014 – The Minnesota Wild and the San Jose Sharks become the fifth and sixth NHL teams since 1943 – when the red line was introduced – to begin the season with two shutouts in 3-0 victories over the Colorado Avalance and the Los Angeles Kings. The teams matched the feat done by the Montreal Canadiens (1955-56), Philadelphia Flyers (1973-74), Calgary Flames (2001-02), and the Florida Panthers (2005-06) and the feat remains unmatched. The all-time record is five, by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1930-31.
In 2003 – Beyonce featuring Sean Paul is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second of nine consecutive weeks with Baby Boy. It was the second of seven #1 songs for Beyonce and the second of three #1 songs for Sean Paul. The song also went to #1 in France, peaked at #2 in Great Britain, was in its third of five consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was Billboard’s 12th-biggest song of 2003 and its 69th-biggest of 2004.
