The Diary of a Nobody – At the hotel, Sparrow deals with a tedious broad who wants a no-pet room. Today’s Diary.

However, as I told this increasingly annoying broad, we have no idea what rooms will be occupied the nite before your arrival, so yours truly could not guarantee her request…She didn’t like this at all, making it sound like we would be dismissing her request out of hand and putting her in a room with a pack of hounds…

History’s long march.

In 1925 – John Scopes, a high school science teacher in Dayton, Tennessee, is indicted for teaching human evolution in his class, a violation of state law. In July, Scopes was found guilty and fined $100, roughly $1,500 in today’s money, and while the Tennessee supreme court upheld the verdict, it was later thrown out because the judge had set the amount of the fine and not the jury. In a strategic move, the defense declined to give a closing summation which, under Tennessee law, deprived the prosecution of delivering one, too.

In 1980 – Jacek Wszola of Poland establishes a new world record in the high jump, jumping 7 feet, 8.5 inches at a meet in West Germany. Wszola broke the mark of 7 feet, 8 inches established by Vladimir Washchecnko of the Soviet Union in 1978 and Wszola’s record was tied the next day by Dietmar Mogenburgh of West Germany and broken in August by Gerd Wessig of East Germany, who jumped 7 feet, 11.75 inches at the Moscow Summer Olympics. The current record is 8 feet, one-quarter inch, by Cuba’s Javier Sotomayor in 1993.

In 1985 – Phil Collins is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the sixth of seven non-consecutive weeks with No Jacket Required. It was the first of two number one albums for Collins and produced four chart singles, all Top 10s, including the #1s  One More Night and Sussido. The album went to #1 in many other countries including Norway and Great Britain and was Billboard’s third-biggest album of the year.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow has a slow day at the veterans service office. Today’s Diary.

Had a moderately busy morning scheduled at the veterans service office (VSO) but it ended up being a slow day…There were two appointments on tap, but one guy called to say he couldn’t make it while the other preferred to let his not showing up speak for itself.

History’s long march.

In 1883 – The Brooklyn Bridge, connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn, opens, the first fixed crossing of the East River. It took 14 years to build, has a span of 1,595 feet, and is 276 feet high. Approximately 1,800 vehicles and 150,000 people crossed the bridge that first day and the bridge now has daily traffic of roughly 105,000 cars. The Brooklyn Bridge was the world’s first steel-wire suspension bridge and was capable of elevated train traffic until 1944 and streetcar traffic until 1950.

In 1980 – The New York Islanders win their first Stanley Cup, defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 5-4 in overtime in game six at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. The winning goal was scored by Bob Nystrom at the 7:11 mark and this was the first of four consecutive Stanley Cup titles for the Islanders and was the second of six losses in the finals for the Flyers. The game was televised by CBS, the last NHL game on American network television until the 1990 All-Star Game aired on NBC.

In 1980 – Dolly Parton is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week with Starting Over Again. The song also went #2 country in Canada, peaked at #36 on the Hot 100, and was Parton’s eleventh of 24 #1 country songs. In 1996, a version by Reba McEntire peaked at #19 on the country chart and the song was co-written by Donna Summer and her husband Bruce Sudano of the group Brooklyn Dreams.

History’s long march.

In 1430 – French heroine Joan of Arc is captured by Burgundian troops at the Siege of Compiegne in northern France in the Hundred Years War. Joan had been part of the French army for a year and was soon transferred to the English. She was put on trial the following January, was convicted on one count of heresy, and was burned at the stake in May. Joan’s conviction was overturned 15 years later, too late to do her any good, and she was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1920.

In 1890 – The New York Giants establish a new National League record for most stolen bases in a game in a 17-10 win over the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. The Giants stole 17 bases, research into whose record they broke was inconclusive, and the Pirates stole three bases with the 20 combined stolen bases remaining the combined National League record. The all-time major league record was established the month before when the Philadelphia Athletics (American Association) stole 19 bases against the Syracuse Stars, and their combined 21 steals is also the all-time major league record.

In 1970 – The Guess Who is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the third and final consecutive week with American Woman. It was the second six Top 10 hits for the group, remains their only #1 song, and the song also went to #1 in Canada and was Billboard’s third-biggest song of the year. The song was written by the band at a concert, the lyrics and tune improvised as a member replaced a string on a guitar. The flip side of the record, No Sugar Tonight, also charted and the record is considered a double-sided hit.

The Daily Dose/May 22, 2022
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. NATO Yeah let’s piss the Russians off even more guys by letting Sweden and Finland in, virtually assuring war in Ukraine will last even longer…SB5 pollsters “strongly suspect” new member applications can be deferred until after Putin is defeated and executed without loss of face.

2. Coors Field -Day at stadium still a good time, but boy, most of game’s current troubles due to complete lack of starting pitching…SB5 pollsters “pretty sure” blame can be laid not only on youth baseball pitching limits, but on fact this is only baseball kids are playing, as sandlot games have long been thing of the past.

3. Donald Trump The 3-hole staple as well as a liar, sexual predator, ignoramus, and insurrectionist…  Instead of being banished for incompetant COVID response, Jan 6 insurrection, Trump continues to be GOP kingmaker, with 2024 GOP presidential nomination his to lose instead of being banished in shame as any other twice-impeached, ignorant, selfish blatherskite of a former president should be.

4. NIL– Nice job by NCAA sluffing off paying players to others, but you do not have to be Knute Rockne or even Nick Saban to know having boosters pay players will lead to even bigger quagmire in major division college sports than there is now.

5. Vangelis Greek genius is died this week and if your only reference for him is Chariots of Fire, you are missing out…If Vangelis and Jon Anderson of Yes hadn’t teamed up for some really minor hits, Vangelis would live down ages as ultimate one-hit wonder, someone whose only chart single went to #1.

…so ol’ Sparrow can return to doing both the nite audit (which requires a credit card processor) and the nightly billing of departing guests sitting on his arse in the back office, as opposed to waddling all the out to the front desk to accomplish these tasks.

History’s long march.

In 1807 – A grand jury in Richmond, Virginia indicts former vice president Aaron Burr on one charge of treason. Among other things, Burr had leased land in the west and raised troops, though his exact motives were never certain. Burr was acquitted and would later flee to Europe, in part to avoid creditors. Burr returned to the US in 1812 and died on Staten Island in 1836. In 1804 – while vice president – Burr killed former Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton in a duel in New Jersey.

In 1962 & 1990 – Roger Maris of the New York Yankees and Andre Dawson of the Chicago Cubs establish major league records for most intentional walks in a game. Maris was intentionally walked four times in a 2-1, 12-inning win over the Los Angeles Angels to break the record of three that had been none many times. Dawson was intentionally walked five times in 2-1, 16-inning win over the Cincinnati Reds, a record that still stands. Not only were both records set in 2-1, extra-inning games, but both games were played on a Tuesday. The nine-inning record is four, by Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants in 2004.

In 1971 – Aretha Franklin is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Best Selling Soul Singles chart – for the only week with Bridge Over Troubled Water. It was the tenth of a soul chart record of 20 #1 songs for Franklin, a record later tied by Stevie Wonder and now held by Drake (25). The song also peaked at #6 on the Hot 100 and earned Franklin the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. The year before, a version by Simon & Garfunkel spent six weeks at #1 on the Hot 100.

Amy addressed the coffee situation when yours truly reported for duty…Tho some have said Amy is responsible for us now offering French roast in addition to the usual light European blend, she said the change was actually GM Andy’s idea, which is not only an admirable job of shifting the blame but probably true, too, because Amy does not have authority to order wholesale changes like this to the morning coffee service (MCS) lineup; that is simply something that can only come from the executive suite.

The Diary of a Nobody – At the gym, Sparrow tries the rowing machine. Today’s Diary.

Let me tell you something, Satan invented this on the Seventh Day while The Big Guy rested…It’s deceptively simple – you hop on and row – but the ten minutes I was allotted before heading in to soak felt like an hour…Still tho, I stuck with it, getting 1,500 meters in –  about the point where a serious rower is just getting limbered up – and felt pretty good afterward.

History’s long march.

In 1758 – Ten-year-old Mary Campbell is kidnapped by Lenape Indians from the family home in southern Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War. Campbell would not be released until October 1764 as part of a general release of whites by the Lenape – also known as Delaware Indians – some of whom chose to return to their Indian families. She married in 1770 and had seven children, though research into the date of her death was inconclusive.

In 1989 – Nancy Lopez of the United States wins the LPGA Championship at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Center in Mason, Ohio, a bit north of Cincinnati. Lopez shot a final round 66 to finish 14-under par, three strokes better than Ayako Okamoto of Japan. It was the third and final LPGA title for Lopez, which remain her only major titles. Lopez was the LPGA Rookie of the Year in 1978 and had been elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1987.

In 2005 – Jo Dee Messina is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then and now known as the Hot Country Songs chart – for the second and final consecutive week with My Give a Damn’s Busted. It was the twelfth and final Top 10 hit for Messina and her sixth and final #1 song. The song also went #1 country in Canada, peaked at #63 on the Hot 100, and was Billboard’s 14th-biggest country song of the year.
