Writing worth reading. Usually.

The Diary of a Nobody – At the hotel, Sparrow deals with a tedious broad who wants a no-pet room. Today’s Diary.

However, as I told this increasingly annoying broad, we have no idea what rooms will be occupied the nite before your arrival, so yours truly could not guarantee her request…She didn’t like this at all, making it sound like we would be dismissing her request out of hand and putting her in a room with a pack of hounds…

History’s long march.

In 1925 – John Scopes, a high school science teacher in Dayton, Tennessee, is indicted for teaching human evolution in his class, a violation of state law. In July, Scopes was found guilty and fined $100, roughly $1,500 in today’s money, and while the Tennessee supreme court upheld the verdict, it was later thrown out because the judge had set the amount of the fine and not the jury. In a strategic move, the defense declined to give a closing summation which, under Tennessee law, deprived the prosecution of delivering one, too.

In 1980 – Jacek Wszola of Poland establishes a new world record in the high jump, jumping 7 feet, 8.5 inches at a meet in West Germany. Wszola broke the mark of 7 feet, 8 inches established by Vladimir Washchecnko of the Soviet Union in 1978 and Wszola’s record was tied the next day by Dietmar Mogenburgh of West Germany and broken in August by Gerd Wessig of East Germany, who jumped 7 feet, 11.75 inches at the Moscow Summer Olympics. The current record is 8 feet, one-quarter inch, by Cuba’s Javier Sotomayor in 1993.

In 1985 – Phil Collins is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the sixth of seven non-consecutive weeks with No Jacket Required. It was the first of two number one albums for Collins and produced four chart singles, all Top 10s, including the #1s  One More Night and Sussido. The album went to #1 in many other countries including Norway and Great Britain and was Billboard’s third-biggest album of the year.
