The Diary of a Nobody/March 10

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, March 10
It was a good but not particularly great troika at the gym this morning…Well, cardio and the soak were strong, but weights were only OK, a combination of not having lifted since last Friday and a lousy week of nutrition.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow chats with a flight attendant. Today’s Diary.

…and yours truly inquired as to how long a day she had…It varies…Sometimes flying to the big city constitutes their day’s work and sometimes it’s just the start and, as it turned out, 206’s day was just beginning…She had four legs today, the last one of which ended up in Honduras of all places…This might sound exciting to some, but she said it was a long, routine day at the office for her.

History’s long march.

In 1831 – The French Foreign Legion is formed after King Louis Phillipe of France consolidates foreign elements of the French Army. Recruits are taken from any country and, following an initial period to confirm motivation and establish eligibility and suitability, sign a 5-year contract. The Legion currently has about 8,000 officers and men, and Legionnaires can apply for French citizenship after three years of service or being wounded in battle, whichever comes first.

In 1955 – The Zamboni ice resurfacing machine makes its debut at the Forum in Montreal in a 0-0 tie between the Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The machine had been invented by Frank Zamboni, an American engineer and inventor a few years earlier as a way to quickly resurface the ice at the family ice rink, a task that previously required several people using squeegees. Today, the most modern Zamboni is battery operated and can cost as much as low six figures.

In 1979 – Gloria Gaynor is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of three non-consecutive weeks with I Will Survive. It was her sixth of seven chart singles, her second and final Top 40 and Top 10 hit, and remains her only #1 song. The song also went to #1 in Ireland, Great Britain, and on Billboard’s dance chart, peaked at #4 on their soul chart, and was their sixth-biggest song of the year. The song spent 13 weeks in the Top 10, including seven weeks at either #1 or #2.

In 1961 – The Soviet Union launches Sputnik 9 from a cosmodrome in what is now Kazakhstan. Onboard was a dog, a guinea pig, some mice, and a mannequin. The flight orbited the earth once and lasted 1 hour and 41 minutes and the mannequin, named Ivan Ivanovich, was ejected during descent to test ejection capabilities. The Soviet Union would launch the first human into space, Yuri Gagarin, on April 12.

In 1895 – The Montreal Victorias of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada (AHAC) become the first team to win three consecutive Stanley Cups, defeating Queen’s University of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) 5-1 in a single-game challenge. The Victorias played in a variety of leagues before disbanding in 1910, while the Queen’s University Gaels compete in the Ontario University Athletics and remain the only team to compete for both the Stanley Cup and the Grey Cup.

In 1991 – Mariah Carey is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with Someday. It was the third of five consecutive #1 songs for Carey – still a Hot 100 record for the start of a career – and her third of 19 #1s, a mark second on the all-time Hot 100 list behind the Beatles (20) and this week was the eighth of a Hot 100-record 87 total weeks Carey has spent at #1. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #38 in Great Britain, at #3 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was their 13th-biggest song of the year.

In 1844 – The Althing, the parliament of Iceland, is authorized to meet again after 44 years. Iceland was then a dependency of Denmark and the legislature had been suspended by royal decree since 1800. Elections were held the following year and the new parliament first met on July 1, 1845, The Althing first met in 930 AD and remains the world’s oldest surviving parliament. The Althing has been unicameral since 1991 – and has been both bi- and tricameral over the centuries -and currently has 63 members.

In 1971 – The Milwaukee Bucks tie the NBA record for most consecutive wins in a 104-99 win over the Seattle Supersonics. It was the 20th consecutive win for the Bucks, who tied the mark established by the Washington Captiols between March and December 1948. The Bucks lost their next game and finished the season with 66 wins, defeating the Baltimore Bullets for the NBA title. The record was broken the following season when the Los Angeles Lakers won 33 consecutive games, a record that still stands.

In 1975 – Bob Dylan is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the second and final consecutive week with Blood on the Tracks.  It was the second of five #1 albums for Dylan and the album produced one chart single, Tangled Up In Blue, which peaked at #31 on the Hot 100. The album also went to #1 in New Zealand and Canada and peaked at #4 in Great Britain.

I walk back to the front desk – by now there are a lot of guests out of their rooms – and conduct the only troubleshooting technique I can: standing in front of the alarm panel and staring at it crossly with my hands on my hips.

History’s long march.

In 1965 – Almost 600 civil rights marchers are attacked with clubs and tear gas by whites at a bridge across the Alabama River in Selma, Alabama. There were no deaths, but 17 marchers were hospitalized and dozens more treated for lesser injuries. Two other marches were held in March and the route is now a national historic trail and the marches led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. It is one of many incidents History refers to as Bloody Sunday.

In 1954 – The Soviet Union wins their first major international ice hockey championship, winning the World Championship following a 7-2 victory over Canada in the final game of the round-robin tournament. The Soviets finished with a 6-0-1 record and 13 points while Canada took the silver medal and host Sweden took the bronze medal. Over the years, the Soviets won 22 world championships and seven Olympic gold medals before its dissolution in 1991.

In 1987 – Bon Jovi is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the fourth and final consecutive week with Livin’ on a Prayer. It was the second of four #1 songs for the group and also went to #1 in Canada, Norway, and New Zealand, peaked at #4 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 10th-biggest song of the year. The song has charted worldwide several times since and last appeared on Billboard charts in 2013, when it peaked at #25 on the Hot 100 and at #8 on the Hot Rock and Alternative Songs chart.

The Daily Dose/March 6, 2022
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. Vladimir Putin Oh Jesus H, Russian president, already off rocker for senseless Ukraine invasion, shows he’s gone completely bonkers by attacking nuclear power plant, whose damage to Europe could’ve been catastrophic…Bullies, bravely confronted, can be vanquished, but ridding ourselves of Putin is going to take diligence, finesse, and courage…Or James Bond.

2. USA! USA! What is Western World to do, though???…Putin has nukes…This isn’t Japan or Iraq or Panama who couldn’t nuke us back…SB5 pollsters “pretty sure” we should all just surrender to Communists right now, as both China and Russia continue to bitch-slap Western World around at will.

3. Donald Trump The 3-hole staple remains a lying sexual predator who believes that 1) the moon is part of Mars and that 2) the Revolution was won by Continental Army securing British airports, ignorance almost beyond comprehension in anyone older than five…SB5 pollsters still curious as to which of these elements continues to impress adherents and secure their support.

4. USA! USA! II – Invader, slaughterer, homophobe, misogynist, it’s no wonder some far right-wingers in US media scrambling for membership in Putin Fan Club; it’s the same media that escorted Trump into 2016 primaries, White House…Good gravy, people, there is no reason for this war, it is merely the latest in History’s long line of dictators needing to show world his schlong is bigger than everyone else’s.

5. USA! USA! III Yay: US knew about Putin’s plans last fall, sharing this information widely…Boo: we, nor anyone else was unable to prevent it…US first dying nation to appear three times in same SB5 survey since Roman Empire in 5th century AD

Now, like yours truly, you might be skeptical that buckets had been in the ceiling for that long, but some checking of the buckets shows it was certainly possible because one of them – they were all big, commercial, plastic buckets – was from Dean’s Premium Pickles and further research showed it had been a delivery to the old Village Inn in town which further research showed had closed in 2010…So yeah, you don’t have to be Joe Friday to conclude that yeah, the buckets had been up there for a while.

History’s long march.

In 1820 – President James Monroe signs the Missouri Compromise, a bill which admitted Maine as a free state, Missouri as a slave state, and made the northern part of the Louisiana Purchase territory slavery-free. The bill was effectively repealed in 1854 by the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which made slavery dependent on the wishes of a territory’s residents. The Kansas-Nebraska Act led to the demise of the Whig Party and the formation of the Republican Party.

In 1982 – The San Antonio Spurs and the Milwaukee Bucks establish a new NBA record for most points in a game in a 171-166, triple-overtime Spurs win. The 337 points broke the record of 316 done twice previously and the record stood until December 13, 1983, when the Detroit Pistons and Denver Nuggets combined for 370 points in a 186-184, triple-overtime Detroit win, a mark that still stands.

In 1982 – The J Geils Band is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the fifth of six consecutive weeks with Centerfold. It was the sixth of nine Top 40 hits for the group in a chart career that started in 1971, their first of two Top 10 hits and remains their only #1 song. The song also went to #1 in Canada and Australia, peaked at #3 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 5th biggest song of the year. The song was written and produced by band member Seth Justman.
