I walk back to the front desk – by now there are a lot of guests out of their rooms – and conduct the only troubleshooting technique I can: standing in front of the alarm panel and staring at it crossly with my hands on my hips.

History’s long march.
In 1965 – Almost 600 civil rights marchers are attacked with clubs and tear gas by whites at a bridge across the Alabama River in Selma, Alabama. There were no deaths, but 17 marchers were hospitalized and dozens more treated for lesser injuries. Two other marches were held in March and the route is now a national historic trail and the marches led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. It is one of many incidents History refers to as Bloody Sunday.
In 1954 – The Soviet Union wins their first major international ice hockey championship, winning the World Championship following a 7-2 victory over Canada in the final game of the round-robin tournament. The Soviets finished with a 6-0-1 record and 13 points while Canada took the silver medal and host Sweden took the bronze medal. Over the years, the Soviets won 22 world championships and seven Olympic gold medals before its dissolution in 1991.
In 1987 – Bon Jovi is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the fourth and final consecutive week with Livin’ on a Prayer. It was the second of four #1 songs for the group and also went to #1 in Canada, Norway, and New Zealand, peaked at #4 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 10th-biggest song of the year. The song has charted worldwide several times since and last appeared on Billboard charts in 2013, when it peaked at #25 on the Hot 100 and at #8 on the Hot Rock and Alternative Songs chart.
