It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Saturday, March 6 Assistant Front Desk Manager Q was there when yours truly reported for duty tonite…Amy was actually working, but Q was sitting on a lobby couch working his phone with a pizza box in his lap…He seemed pretty occupied, so I just waved and evidently, he and Amy have patched things up because Amy ended up giving him a ride home because Q still does not drive nor, apparently did he want to fork over for a taxi or slum and take the bus, which would oblige him to walk up the steep hill to his apartment.
Ol’ Sparrow, committed to excellence, came back strong, however, in the post-workout soak, spending an entire hour in his fave hot spring, almost long enuff to be carved up and served with your choice of potato…

In 1940 – The Soviet politburo, whose membership includes Joseph Stalin, authorizes the massacre of over 25,000 Polish intellectuals and POWs, in an incident History refers to as the Katyn Massacre. Questions about the whereabouts of the POWs began to surface the following year and mass graves were first discovered by, of all people, the Nazis in Katyn Forest in what is now western Russia, near the Belarussian border. Executions occurred in April and May, in insulated rooms where victims were shot and then moved out a door and thrown in waiting trucks.
In 1965 – Ernie Terrell defeats Eddie Machen in a 15-round unanimous decision in Chicago for the WBA heavyweight title vacated by Muhammed Ali. Terrell would defend his title twice before losing it to Ali – who had retained his WBC title – in a 15-round unanimous decision in Houston in February 1967. From 2009 until his death in 2014 at age 75, Terrell was the oldest living heavyweight, another title eventually surrendered to Ali.
In 1977 – Barbra Streisand is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with Evergreen (Love Theme From A Star Is Born). It was the second of five #1 songs for Streisand and she and co-writer Paul Williams won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Grammy Award for Song of the Year. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #3 in Great Britain, and was from the soundtrack to the movie A Star Is Born, which was in its fourth of six consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

[The cat] strongly suspected, however, that yours truly would be retiring to the couch forthwith and was actually meowing from the coffee table demanding my presence and was lying on my chest almost immediately after I reported for couch duty.

In 1789 – The United States Constitution, ratified in 1787, takes effect when the first United States Congress meets for the first time, at Federal Hall in New York City. Both the House and Senate would achieve their first quorums in early April and George Washington was inaugurated president on April 30. The Congress also passed eleven amendments to the Constitution that are still in effect, what became the Bill of Rights, ratified in 1791, and what became the 27th Amendment, ratified in 1992.
In 1941 – Goalie Sam LoPresti of the Chicago Blackhawks establishes an NHL record for most shots faced in a regulation game in a 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins. LoPresti faced 83 shots and research into whose record he broke was inconclusive. The all-time NHL record is 92, by Normie Smith of the Detroit Red Wings in a six overtime game in the 1936 Stanley Cup semifinals in what remains the NHL’s longest game. Shots faced, officially known as shots against, became an official NHL stat in the 1955-56 season and while LoPresti’s record has not been topped, it is not listed in the NHL record book.
In 1972 – Al Green is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart for the ninth and final consecutive week with Let’s Stay Together. In February, the song had spent a week at #1 on the Hot 100 and was Billboard’s biggest soul song of the year and their 11th-biggest pop it. The song was the first of six #1 soul songs for Green and remains his only #1 pop hit. Later in 1972, a version by Isaac Hayes went #25 soul and #48 pop, and in 1984 a version by Tina Turner went #3 soul and #26 pop.

In 1931 – Congress adopts The Star-Spangled Banner as the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics had been written by Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore during the War of 1812 and the melody was from an old English drinking song. Prior to this, various songs were used as national anthems, including Hail, Columbia, My Country Tis of Thee, and America the Beautiful, which itself had been considered as the permanent anthem.
In 1981 – The Edmonton Oilers and the New York Islanders tie the NHL record for most goals in a tie game in an 8-8 game played in New York. The teams tied the record established by the Montreal Maroons and the New York Americans on February 18, 1936 and the mark was tied on six other occasions before the NHL adopted the shoot-out rule in 2005 which ended tie games.
In 1973 – Roberta Flack is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of five non-consecutive weeks with Killing Me Softly With His Song. The song won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Female Vocal Performance and was the second of three #1s for Flack.

It’s ski season in Ski Town, USA for Christ’s sake, that’s why we’re so busy…That’s why the parking lot is jammed packed and why the bar is still open…I wanted to smack her…Usually, we get wizardry like this from folks we’ve turned away because we’re sold out because guests don’t care, they’ve got a room, but not this one; she was genuinely curious as to why a hotel in a ski resort would be sold out in winter.

In 1657 – A fire destroys between 60 and 70 percent of the Japanese capital of Edo – now Tokyo – a fire that lasts three days and kills an estimated one hundred thousand people. The fire allegedly started when a gust of wind caught a fire tended by a priest burning a supposedly-cursed kimono. History reports the fire eventually burned itself out, that most of the dead were later burned, and that reconstruction took two years. Edo became Tokyo in 1868.
In 1986 – Kenny Knox wins the Honda Classic golf tournament by one stroke over four other golfers. It was the first of three PGA tour wins for Knox, who shot an 80 in the third round, the last time a PGA tour event has been won by a player who shot a round in the 80s and Knox’s 1-under par, 72-hole total of 287 is the 3rd-highest winning score in PGA Tour history. Knox’s best finish at a major was a 4th-place finish at the 1991 PGA Championship.
In 1985 – Missing You by Diana Ross is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Black Singles chart – for the second of three consecutive weeks. The song also peaked at #76 in Great Britain, at #10 on the Hot 100, and remains Ross’ last of five #1 soul hits and her last Top 10 pop hit. The song was written by Lionel Ritchie as a tribute to Marvin Gaye, who had been shot to death by his father in April 1984.

In 1562 – Sixty-three Huguenots – Protestant followers of John Calvin – are massacred by Catholics in Wassy, in northeastern France. The massacre was led by Francis, Duke of Guise, who was returning to Paris and had heard about a Protestant gathering. After some initial resistance at the door, forces gained admittance to about 500 worshippers singing Psalms. History refers to the incident as the Massacre of Vassy, which would turn out to be the opening battle in the French Wars of Religion (1562-98).
In 1919 – Newsy Lalande of the Montreal Canadiens establishes a new NHL playoff record for most goals in a game in a 6-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators in Game 3 of the NHL Championship. Lalonde broke the record of three that had been done several times previously. The record still stands and has been equaled on four other occasions. The Canadiens won the best-of-seven series in five games and advanced to the Stanley Cup final against the Seattle Metropolitans of the Pacific Coast Hockey League in a series that was canceled after five games due to an influenza outbreak.
In 1980 – The Whispers are at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the first of five consecutive weeks with And the Beat Goes On. It was the third of 13 Top 10 soul hits for the group and their first of two #1 soul songs. The song also went to #1 on Billboard’s dance chart, peaked at #2 in Great Britain, at #19 on the Hot 100, and was Billboard’s 5th-biggest soul song of the year.
