The Diary of a Nobody – The cat goes outside to play. It doesn’t last long. Today’s Diary.

The big news is the cat snuck out…I had just come in to get the car keys so I could drive the store and neglected to shut the door and the screen door didn’t close all the way so she slipped out…She came right back in, tho it’s not clear if she did this at daddy’s command or because it was colder outside than inside…

History’s long march.

In 1991 – The flag of the Soviet Union ceases flying over the Kremlin in Moscow, replaced by the Russian flag. Earlier in the day, Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as Soviet president and signed over control of the Soviet nuclear arsenal to Russian President Boris Yelstin. The formality of breaking up the Soviet Union would conclude the following day when its highest legislative body, the Supreme Soviet, votes both itself and the country out of existence.

In 1995 – Emmit Smith of the Dallas Cowboys establishes a new NFL record for most touchdowns in a season in a 37-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Smith had one touchdown, giving him 25 for the season – all rushing – to break the record of 24 established by John Riggins of the Washington Redskins in 1983. The record was broken in 2000 by Marshall Faulk (26) and is now held by LaDainian Tomlinson, who had 31 in 2006.

Today – Mariah Carey is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the sixth non-consecutive week with All I Want For Christmas Is You. The song had previously gone to #1 in both 2019 and 2020 and marks the first time a song has gone to #1 on the Hot 100 in three separate chart runs, breaking a tie Carey had held with Chubby Checker, who went to #1 twice with The Twist. The song first charted in January 2000, peaking at #83, and to date has spent 49 weeks on the Hot 100. Carey has had 19 #1 songs, one less than the all-time Hot 100 record 20 set by the Beatles.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow tells his unfunny story about his fence being torn down. Today’s Diary.

Then she asked if the weed store was a good neighbor and I said sure and trotted my usual story about them inadvertently tearing my fence down, which I’m beginning to suspect may not be as hilarious as I think it is…

History’s long march.

In 1814 – Representatives of Great Britain and the United States sign the Treaty of Ghent in what is now Belgium, ending the War of 1812. The British parliament approved the treaty on December 30 and the treaty took effect in February 1815 after being ratified by the US Senate. The result of the war is generally considered to have been a draw, despite British forces occupying the US capital of Washington, D.C., which at the time was not considered to be that important a city.

In 1982 – The Chaminade Silverswords of Hawaii, then a member of the small college National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) defeat the top-ranked Virginia Cavaliers 77-72 in Honolulu, in what is sometimes considered one the biggest upsets in American sports history. The Cavaliers were led by Ralph Sampson and were making a stop on their way home from playing two games in Japan. Chaminade would end the season losing in the national semifinals of the NAIA tournament while Virginia lost in the West Regional finals of the NCAA tournament. Chaminade is now an NCAA Division II member.

In 1966 – The New Vaudeville Band is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the third and final non-consecutive week with Winchester Catherdral. The song also peaked at #4 in their native Great Britain, was Billboard’s 18th-biggest song of the year and won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Rock & Roll Recording. It was the first chart single for the group and only a #72 followup prevented them from being an ultimate one-hit-wonder: an act whose only chart single goes to #1.

The Diary of a Nobody – Creamer Challenge II is over. Today’s Diary.

Because we’ve been sold out most of the week, it’s hardly the Upset of the Year that Creamer Challenge II wrapped up this morning with French vanilla moving to 2-and-0 for the series with a close, and I do mean close, win over half & half…

History’s long march.

In 1913 – President Woodrow Wilson signs the Federal Reserve Act, establishing a central bank in the US to manage currency and monetary policy. The act had been passed by Congress earlier in the day and was America’s first central bank since the 1830s. Though a part of the US government, the Federal Reserve does not receive Congressional-appropriated funding and is governed by a seven-member board of governors appointed by the president, confirmed by the Senate and who serve 14-year terms.

In 1978 – Bryan Trottier of the New York Islanders establishes a new NHL record for most points in a period in a 9-4 win over the New York Rangers. Trottier had three goals and three assists and the six points in the second period broke the record of five points done many times previously. The mark was tied in March of this year by Mika Zibanejad of the Rangers and still stands.

In 1995 – Mariah Carey and Boyz II men are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the 4th of a then-record setting 16 consecutive weeks with One Sweet Day. The 16 weeks at #1 would break the record of 14 weeks established by Whitney Houston (I Will Always Love You, 1992-93) and tied in 1994 by Boyz II Men (I’ll Make Love To You). The record was tied several times before being broken by Lil Nas X who spent 19 weeks at #1 – 18 of them with Billy Ray Cyrus – with Old Town Road in 2019.

In 401 – Innocent I assumes the papacy, succeeding his father Anastasius I, who had died a couple of days earlier, the only known instance of a son succeeding his father as pope. Innocent I served for 16 years and, among other things, is remembered for determining which books became parts of the sacred Catholic canon. Innocent has been the name of twelve other popes over the centuries, the last being Pope Innocent XIII from 1721-24.

In 1894 – The United States Golf Association (USGA) – then known as the Amateur Golf Association of the United States – forms in New York City, as a way to consolidate the two US amateur championships that were being conducted. The USGA would hold its first tournaments, the US Amateur and the US Open, the following year in Newport, Rhode Island and today the USGA conducts 14 championships, four professional and ten for amateurs.

In 1984 – Madonna is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of six consecutive weeks with Like a Virgin. It was the fourth of 49 Top 40 hits for Madonna, her third of 38 Top 10 hits and was her first of twelve #1 songs. The song went to #1 in three other countries, peaked at #3 in Great Britain, at #9 on Billboard’s soul chart and was their second-biggest song of 1985. Madonna’s 38 Top 10 hits are second behind on the all-time Hot 100 list behind Drake’s 54.

History’s long march.

In 1967 – Louis Washkansky of South Africa, the first recipient of a human-to-human heart transplant, dies in Cape Town. Washkansky survived for 18 days after his transplant and had not only regained consciousness but had been able to speak with his wife and reporters. The surgical team had been led by Dr Christaan Barnard and the donor was a 25-year-old woman who had been struck by a car a few hours earlier. While brain dead, her heart was still beating and Barnard injected her with potassium to paralyze the heart so she could be declared legally dead. Her kidneys were donated as well.

In 1891 – The first basketball game is played in Springfield, Massachusetts by students at the YMCA. The game had been invented by faculty member James Naismith, who nailed peach baskets ten feet off the ground at either end of the gym and posted a list of 13 rules. Basketball came after attempts to modify soccer, football and lacrosse for indoor use proved futile and the first game with a recorded result would be played in March. Basketball became an Olympic sport at the 1936 Berlin games.

In 1959 –  Marty Robbins is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot C&W Sides chart – for the first of seven consecutive weeks with El Paso. The song was Robbins’ sixth of 16 #1 country hits and later became his only #1 pop hit, spending two weeks at #1 on the Hot 100. El Paso was the first #1 country and pop song of the 1960s, also went #1 country in Canada and won the Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording.
