History’s long march.
In 1913 – President Woodrow Wilson signs the Federal Reserve Act, establishing a central bank in the US to manage currency and monetary policy. The act had been passed by Congress earlier in the day and was America’s first central bank since the 1830s. Though a part of the US government, the Federal Reserve does not receive Congressional-appropriated funding and is governed by a seven-member board of governors appointed by the president, confirmed by the Senate and who serve 14-year terms.
In 1978 – Bryan Trottier of the New York Islanders establishes a new NHL record for most points in a period in a 9-4 win over the New York Rangers. Trottier had three goals and three assists and the six points in the second period broke the record of five points done many times previously. The mark was tied in March of this year by Mika Zibanejad of the Rangers and still stands.
In 1995 – Mariah Carey and Boyz II men are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the 4th of a then-record setting 16 consecutive weeks with One Sweet Day. The 16 weeks at #1 would break the record of 14 weeks established by Whitney Houston (I Will Always Love You, 1992-93) and tied in 1994 by Boyz II Men (I’ll Make Love To You). The record was tied several times before being broken by Lil Nas X who spent 19 weeks at #1 – 18 of them with Billy Ray Cyrus – with Old Town Road in 2019.
