…in fact, there was even some bonus cleaning (BC) which longtime readers of this crap know is something on par with planetary alignment…To wit: after the dishes were washed and dried they were all put away!!!…Usually, they’re left in the rack in the sink because they’re merely going to be used again…

In 1969 – Humans reach the moon for the second time with Pete Conrad and Alan Bean landing on Apollo 12. Apollo 12 was struck by lightning shortly after blastoff and would later spend over 32 hours on the lunar surface with Conrad and Bean spending almost eight hours exploring the moon, including inspecting Surveyor 3, man’s first terrestrial contact with a previously launched spacecraft. Command module pilot Richard Gordon` remained in lunar orbit and the crew would return to Earth on Nov 24th.

In 2018 – The Los Angeles Rams defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 54-51 in the only NFL game where both teams scored at least 50 points. The game was tied 23-23 at halftime and the Rams got a touchdown with 1:49 left in the game to take the lead. It remains the third highest-scoring game in NFL history behind the Washington Redskins defeating the New York Giants 72-41 in 1966 and the Cincinnati Bengals defeating the Cleveland Browns 58-48 in 2004.

In 1988 – Anita Baker is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Black Singles chart – for the second and final consecutive week with Giving You the Best That I Got. The song also peaked at #3 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and at #55 in Great Britain and won Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song. It was the first of two #1 soul hits for Baker and remains her biggest pop hit.

In 1883 – Time zones come to North America as Canadian and American railways adopt five time zones, incorporating a system where time zones bordered on major cities. Previously, individual railroads had kept their own time, usually the time kept at its headquarters or major depot. Congress would not start regulating time for 35 years, until the passage of the Standard Time Act of 1918.

In 1979 – Richard Petty wins the NASCAR Winston Cup Series title after a 5th-place finish at the Los Angeles Times 500 at the Ontario Motor Speedway. Petty won the title by eleven points over Darrell Waltrip and the race marked the first time in NASCAR history the points lead had changed hands in the final race. It was the seventh and final NASCAR title for Petty, a NASCAR record now shared with Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson.

In 1967 – Sam and Dave are at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Rhythm & Blues Singles chart – for the sixth of seven consecutive weeks with Soul Man. It was the sixth of seven Top 10 soul hits for the duo and their second and final #1 song. The song was also in its third week at #2 on the Hot 100 and in 1979 a version by the Blues Brothers peaked at #14 on the Hot 100. The song was written by longtime songwriting partners Issac Hayes and David Porter.

The Daily Dose/November 17, 2021
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

Leading Off
Notes from around our human experience.

REELING IN THE YEARS: Recently in this space, we noted a mistake we made regarding acts who have had #1 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 plus their soul and country charts, adding Ray Charles to a list we swore only included Elvis, the Everly Brothers and Billy Ray Cyrus.

Today we offer further proof we are losing our minds: the Atlanta Braves franchise turned 150-years-old this past season and nothing was noted here about it. Regular readers of this crap know this is an upset. Few enjoy baseball history as much as we do and everyone had every right to expect us to be all over it, if not here certainly in On This Date. =

Oh Hell: But we weren’t, not noticing it until we saw a photo recently of the Braves celebrating their recent World Series title and noticed the commemorative patch on the sleeve.

Shorthand Me: The Atlanta Braves started in Boston as the Red Stockings, playing their first game on May 5, 1871, in the old National Association, which is generally not considered a major league. The Red Stockings finished 20-10 that year, two games behind the Athletics of Philadephia, who have no connection to today’s Oakland Athletics.

This Is Dry, Technical Matter, Isn’t It?: The National Association folded in 1875 and the Red Stockings joined the fledgling National League as the Boston Red Caps the following year. They had a variety of nicknames before permanently becoming the Braves in 1941 and they moved to Milwaukee in 1953 and Atlanta in 1966.

The Bottom Line: We are going to save some face here by noting during this past regular season the Braves played their 22,000th game and scored their 100,000th run, something else we would have been all over in our prime. We’re not going to whine about it, though we have made note that the Braves’ 200th anniversary coming up in 2071 because we will be 106 then and don’t want to miss it.

with two (2) beat downs to Cowboys and a chance to avenge win vs. Giants still remaining, veteran B-10 fan(s) know you disregard Washington’s medal stand chances at your peril…

In 1558 – Elizabeth I ascends the throne of England after the death of her half-sister Mary I. Both were daughters of Henry VIII and Elizabeth would reign until 1603 – then the 5th-longest reign by an English monarch – a period History refers to as the Elizabethan Era. Elizabeth never married, is widely believed to have died a virgin and was succeeded by her cousin James I, who was also James VI of Scotland.

In 1956 – Jim Brown of the Syracuse Orangemen establishes new NCAA major and all-division records for most points in a game in a 61-7 victory over the Colgate Red Raiders. Brown had six touchdowns and kicked six PATs for 43 points to break the record of 42 which had been done twice before. The major division record would stand until 1990 when Howard Griffith of Illinois scored 48 points vs. Southern Illinois and 48 remains the NCAA all-division record, done many times.

In 1979 – The Eagles are at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the third of nine consecutive weeks with The Long Run. The album also peaked at #4 in Great Britain, was Billboard’s 2nd-biggest album of 1980 and won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. There were three Top 40 hits from the album, including the #1 hit Heartache Tonight. The album was scheduled to be a double album, however, the group was not able to produce enough songs for one.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow has the latest kitchen news. Today’s Diary.

The big news is yours truly changed up Spinach a la Sparrow a bit tonite…Previously, of course, I brought some bleu cheese and pre-cooked bacon, put in the bowl, and then added the freshly microwaved spinach on top and then stirred it all together.

Not tonite…In the hopes of getting to most of the bleu cheese before it got all melted and gooey, I put the spinach in the bowl let it cool down for a bit, and then added the bleu cheese and pre-cooked bacon…This was a nice change, resulting in even more bleu cheese flavor for ol’ Sparrow.

The Bottom Ten/NCAA Week 12 – The race for the ESPNCup rolls on.

Green Wave showing mettle that leads straight to B-10 medal stand, seamlessly overcoming 4th-quarter touchdown, onside kick recovery, game-tying field goal to blow game in overtime…

Commodores still reeling from turn-of-century decision to merge Athletic, Student Affairs departments as ROTC members taking over kicking duties replace footballs with mortars, resulting in NCAA-record 13 illegal use of explosives penalties.

B-10 staffers not only sending Longhorn coaching staff B-10 Welcome Aboard packet but also United Van Lines, Bekins, U-Haul brochures.

The long march to today.

In 1776 – British and Hessian forces defeat the Americans in the American Revolution’s Battle of Fort Washington in northwest Manhattan. Maj. Gen. George Washington had ordered the fort to be abandoned, instructions that were disregarded. The victory consolidated British control of New York City, while Washington and the Continental Army retreated through New Jersey to Pennsylvania. The site is now Bennett Park, just north of the George Washington Bridge.

In 1957 – Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics establishes a new NBA record for most rebounds in a game in a 111-89 win over the Philadelphia Warriors. Russell had 49 rebounds to break the record of 38 Maurice Stokes of the Rochester Royals – now the Sacramento Kings – established on Jan 14, 1956, and his 32 first-half rebounds remains the NBA single-half record. Russell would break this mark with 51 rebounds on Feb 5, 1960, and the record is now 55, done by Wilt Chamberlain of the Warriors on Nov 24, 1960.

In 1963 – Buck Owens is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the fifth of 16 consecutive weeks with Love’s Gonna Live Here. It was the tenth Top 40 country hit for Owens, his second #1 song – and the second of a then-record 14 consecutive #1 songs – and remains his biggest hit. The song spent 24 weeks in the Top 10 – from late September until early March – and spent 30 weeks on the chart.
