In 1860 – Abraham Lincoln is elected president of the United States with 180 electoral votes and 39.8% of the popular vote, defeating John C Breckenridge (72, 18.1%), John Bell (39, 12.6%) and Stephen A Douglas (12, 29.5%). Voter turnout was 81.2%, a record that stood until the election of 1876 when 81.8% of voters turned out. Lincoln was reelected in 1864 and assassinated in April 1865.

In 1993 – Evander Holyfield regains the WBA and IBF world heavyweight boxing titles, defeating Riddick Bowe by majority decision in a 12-round fight at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The previous November Bowe had won the title from Holyfield via a 12-round unanimous decision and the fight remains known for the man who parachuted into the ring in the 7th round, causing a 21-minute delay.

In 1993 – Meat Loaf is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of five consecutive weeks with I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That). It was the fourth of seven Top 40 hits for Meat Loaf and remains his only Top 10 hit. The song went to #1 in 28 different countries including Iceland, Norway and Great Britain, was Billboard’s 36th biggest song of the year and its 38th-biggest song of 1994. The song was written by Jim Steinman and earned Meat Loaf the Grammy Award for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow gets yet another mattress pad for the bed. Today’s Diary.

There’s a flammability warning on the package [of the new one] and while the heated mattress pad doesn’t involve an open flame, I thought it smart not to have the heating elements right next to the new pad…

In 1940 – Franklin Delano Roosevelt becomes the first president of the United States to be elected to more than two terms, defeating Wendell Wilkie in the Electoral College 449-82 and winning the popular vote 54.7% to 44.7%. Following his election to a fourth term in 1944, everyone got their shorts in a knot and presidents are now limited to two terms and Roosevelt remains the only president elected to a third and fourth term.

In 1982 – The Cleveland Cavaliers lose their last of an NBA record 24 consecutive games in a 99-91 loss to the New Jersey Nets, a streak that had started on March 19 of the previous season. The Cavaliers would end the streak on Nov 10, a 132-120 overtime win against the Golden State Warriors and they would break this mark with 26 straight losses in the 2010-11 season. The record is now held by the Philadelphia 76ers, who lost 28 consecutive games between March 2015 and November 2015 and the Cavaliers would finish the 1982-83 season with a 23-59 record.

In 1977 – LTD is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart for the first of two consecutive weeks with (Every Time I Turn Around) Back in Love Again, a song that also peaked at #2 in Canada and at #4 on the Hot 100. It was the second of three #1 soul hits for the group and remains their biggest pop hit. The lead singer was Jeffrey Osborne, who later had a successful solo career that produced eight Top 40 pop and 18 Top 40 soul hits.

In 1960 – English primatologist Dr Jane Goodell becomes the first human to observe chimpanzees making tools, at the Kasakela chimpanzee community in Tanzania. Goodell observed two chimpanzees stripping leaves from sticks to go fishing for termites to eat; previously, only tool usage had been observed in chimpanzees. The Kasakela chimpanzee community still operates and – outside of newspapers – remains the longest continuous study of animals in their natural habitat.

In 1991 – The Arizona Diamondbacks tie the World Series record for most pinch-runners used in an inning in a 3-2 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 7 of the World Series. The Diamondbacks used two pinch-runners to tie the mark done nine times previously and matched in 2004 by the Boston Red Sox. This record remains the latest a major league record has been set and this game, along with Game 6 of the 2009 World Series, are the latest a major league baseball game has been played.

In 1978 – Barbara Mandrell is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the first of three consecutive weeks with Sleeping Single in a Double Bed. It was the 26th country chart single for Mandrell and her first of six country #1 songs in a chart career that spanned from 1969-89. The song also went #1 country in Canada, peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Bubbling Under the Hot 100 chart and was Billboard’s 9th-biggest country song of the year.

After you check someone in there a new box that pops up and you didn’t have to be Conrad Hilton to know it was to make keys because the room number and dates of stay were already populated, all you had to do was type in how many keys you need and that was easy, too, because the box was already highlighted; all you had to do was type in the number, a wonderfully efficient way to make room keys.

In 1534 – The English Parliament passes the Act of Supremacy, which makes the monarch – then King Henry VIII – the ruler of the Church of England, displacing the pope and the Roman Catholic church. The Act would be repealed later in the century when Roman Catholic Queen Mary I reigned and would be renewed in 1558. The senior cleric of the Church of England is the archbishop of Canterbury.

In 1935 – The Philadelphia Eagles and the Boston Redskins establish a new NFL record for most interceptions in a game in a 7-6 Eagles victory at Fenway Park. The teams combined for eleven interceptions – seven by the Eagles – and research into whose record was broken was inconclusive. The record was tied several times before being broken by the Denver Broncos and the Houston Oilers, who combined for 13 on December 2, 1962.

In 1951 – Tony Bennett is at #1 on Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart – one of several predecessors to the Hot 100 – for the first of six consecutive weeks with Cold, Cold Heart. It was the second of three #1 songs on a Billboard pop chart for Bennett and his second of seven Top 10 hits. The song was written by Hank Williams and earlier in the year his version spent a week at #1 on Billboard’s Most Played by Jockeys country chart and in 1961 a version by Jerry Lee Lewis went to #22 on the country chart.

In 1920 – Radio station KDKA in Pittsburgh becomes the first commercial radio station, broadcasting the returns from Warren Harding’s win over James Cox. NBC would become the first national network in 1926 and the first nationwide broadcast was the 1927 Rose Bowl. KDKA’s owner, Westinghouse, came up with the idea in the hopes of selling more radios and prior radio shows had been done by private citizens, known as “hams”. KDKA remains on the air at 1220 AM.

In 2014 – The Winnipeg Jets establish a new NHL record for the quickest goal in a 1-0 game in a victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. The only goal came 20 seconds into the game by right-winger Michael Frolik. Research into whose record the Jets broke was inconclusive, however this remains the only 1-0 game in NHL history where the only goal was scored in the first minute.

In 1985 – Stevie Wonder is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with Part-Time Lover. The song also went to #1 in six other countries, peaked at #3 in Great Britain and was in its third of six consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart. The song also went to #1 on Billboard’s dance and adult contemporary charts, making Wonder the first act to have a single hit #1 on four different Billboard charts, a feat later accomplished by Mariah Carey. It was his ninth and final #1 song on the Hot 100.
