The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow provides (further) proof that he will whine about anything. Today’s Diary. 

There was a lot of rain today…We’ll take all the rain Mother Nature chooses to favor us with, of course, but it would blow if it affected Friday’s lawn mowing…I gathered Cliff doesn’t get to the small town all that often and the lawn really needs mowing…It might be the last of the season, too, because this is about the time it usually goes completely dormant.

The long march to today. 

In 1666 – What History knows as the Great Fire of London breaks out at a bakery on Pudding Lane near London Bridge. The fire spread quickly and St Paul’s Cathedral was destroyed two nights later and the fire was not completely extinguished until Sept 6. Most official death tolls put the total in single digits, however, the exact total remains unknown. Between 70,000 and 80,000 people were left homeless. 

In 1924 – Bill Tilden of the US wins his fifth consecutive US Open – then known as the US National Championship – title defeating Bill Johnston 6-1, 9-7, 6-2. It was the third of four consecutive Tilden would beat Johnston in the final and Johnston’s six runner-up finishes remain a tournament record. Johnston had won the tournament in 1915 and 1919 while Tilden would win the tournament again in 1925 and 29.

In 1978 – Franki Valli is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second and final consecutive week with Grease. It was the seventh and final #1 song for Valli, a figure which includes five #1s with the Four Seasons. The song also went to #1 in Israel and Canada and peaked at #3 in Great Britain. The song was written by Barry Gibb and the album Grease was also in its sixth of twelve weeks at #1 on Billboard’s album chart.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow is foiled in his attempt to mow the lawn. Today’s Diary. 

So yours truly gets back to The Shire primed for action, and the effing mower wouldn’t start!!!…I am not making that up…The problem was the pull cord that starts it wasn’t pulling all the way: it would stop at assorted times in the process…Abruptly, too, so that ol’ Sparrow’s shoulder was almost torn out a couple of times. 

The Bottom Ten/NFL Week 1 – The race for The Dan Henning Trophy – symbolic of NFL Bottom Ten supremacy – is on. Note: The Bottom  Ten is on the house through Week 3.

9. Jacksonville at Houston – B-10 fan(s) everywhere already salivating over this Week 1 thriller as Jaguars, Texans have combined to lose 27 straight, with B-10 pollsters “pretty sure” this is “like, really bad and stuff”…Game already being heralded by B-10 fan(s) everwhere as B-10 Game of the Year nominee.

The long march to today. 

In 1897 – The first underground transit system in North America – the Tremont Street Subway – opens in Boston. Though portions of the original line are no longer used, a portion is now part of the Green Line, providing service from Boylston Street to Government Center and is the third-oldest subway in the world behind systems in London and Budapest. From the start, the subway has been powered by overhead electrical lines. 

In 1958 – Wilmer “Vinegar Bend” Mizel of the St Louis Cardinals establishes a new National League record for most walks in a shutout in a 1-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Mizel walked eight batters and research into whose record he broke was inconclusive and the mark still stands. The major league record is 11, done by Lefty Gomez of the New York Yankees in 1941. Later, Mizel would serve three terms in the US House representing North Carolina’s 5th District. 

In 1984 – Tina Turner is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with What’s Love Got To Do With It. The song also went to #1 in Australia and Canada, peaked at #3 in Great Britain. at #2 on Billboard’s soul chart and was Billboard’s second-biggest song of the year. It remains her only appearance at #1 on a Billboard singles chart and Turner, 44 at the time, established the record for the oldest woman to have a #1 hit on the Hot 100. The mark was later broken by Grace Slick and is now held by Cher.

The second creamer usage test (CUT) appears to be a dead heat, with both French vanilla and half & half running neck and neck with both about halfway thru their boxes…

The long march to today. 

In 1864 – Elements of the Union Army led by Major General William T Sherman begin their assault on Atlanta as Sherman attempts to draw Confederate General John Bell Hood and his Army of Tennessee away from their defenses in the American Civil War. The maneuver worked, and while Hood’s army was not destroyed Hood’s army abandoned the city with Sherman occupying Atlanta on September 2nd. History refers to this battle as the Battle of Jonesboro. 

In 1984 – Pinklon Thomas of the US wins the WBC heavyweight championship, defeating champion Tim Witherspoon in a 12-round majority decision in Las Vegas. In June 1`985 Thomas defended his title with an eighth-round TKO over Mike Weaver and lost it in a unanimous decision to Trevor Berbick in March 1986. In 1992 Thomas won the IBO and WBF heavyweight titles before losing them to Lawrence Carter in 1993. 

In 1959 – The Browns are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second of four consecutive weeks with The Three Bells. The song also went to #1 in Australia, was in its first of ten consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s country chart and the song also peaked at #10 on Billboard’s soul chart. It was the first pop hit for the group, their fifth of six Top 10 country hits and remains their only #1 song on either chart.

The Diary of a Nobody – At the hotel, Sparrow fields several phone calls from folks looking to get a room. Today’s Diary. 

Boy, the whole town was in heat tonight, as ol’ Sparrow fielded numerous calls from people plainly looking for a place to score…They were all told the same thing: $150, plus tax.

It was funny because after you advised them of the expense involved in getting some invariably there’s silence as an immediate cost/benefit study is conducted and you could almost see them looking their potential mate up and down, determining if the dividend would merit the investment and two of them decided yes indeedy, the expense was justified.

The long march to today. 

In 1963 – The hotline between Washington and Moscow goes into operation. Although sometimes thought to be a telephone, it initially was a Teletype machine, then later became fax machines and is now a secure email setup that primarily utilizes satellite technology with a fiber optic cable as a backup. A similar hotline between Washington and Beijing was established in 2007. 

In 1987 – Gino Petralli of the Texas Rangers sets the American League record and ties the modern major league record for most passed balls in a game in a 7-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Catching knuckleball pitcher Charlie Hough, Petralli had six passed balls to tie the mark established by Rube Vickers of the Cincinnati Reds in 1902, a mark equaled in 1996 by Jerry Goff of the Houston Astros. The all-time major league record is 12, done in 1887 by Alex Gardner of the Washington Statesmen (American Association) in his only major league game. 

In 1975 – The Rolling Stones are at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the sixth of seven consecutive weeks with Emotional Rescue. It was the eighth of nine – and seventh consecutive – #1 albums for the group and was their 16th of 37 Top 10 albums, a figure that includes compilation and live albums and which is an all-time Billboard 200 record. The album produced two Top 40 hits, including the title track which peaked at #3 on the Hot 100.
