The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow trains the new night auditor at the hotel and it is a slow night at the retailer, though Sparrow does deal with a cheap customer and helps a guy activate his gift card. Today’s Diary.
Then her mother, standing about ten feet away, got wind that her precious, grown-up daughter wasn’t to get her treasured five dollars back and yelped:
“I thought you price matched!!!”
It was a shriek!!!…I almost cowered and wept…I managed to compose myself enuff to explain well, yes, ma’am, we do in certain circumstances, but not from one clearance price to another and it was all academic anyway because your dumb-dumb daughter didn’t have her receipt anyway, not that it would have done her any good in this case.

In 1999 – President Bill Clinton is acquitted by the United States Senate. The trial stemmed from two impeachment articles issued by the United States House of Representatives, one of perjury and one of obstruction of justice. Both articles stemmed from his affair with Monica Lewinsky and two other articles were not approved by the House. Clinton was the second president to face trial by the Senate. In 1868 President Andrew Johnson was acquitted by one vote on eleven articles.
In 1993 – The San Jose Sharks lose to the Edmonton Oilers 6-0, their 17th consecutive loss, tying the NHL record established by the 1974-75 Washington Capitals. The record still stands and the Sharks, then in their second season, would snap their streak two nights later with a 3-2 over the Winnipeg Jets. The Sharks would finish the season 11-71-2.
In 1966 – Giddyup Go by Red Sovine is #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the sixth and final week. It was Sovine’s second of three #1s on the country chart and also peaked at #82 on Billboard’s Hot 100. The song, fairly touching, is about a truck driver who comes home to find his wife and young son gone. His son later becomes a trucker and the two end up reuniting at a truck stop.

Sandra, the new night auditor, favored us with her presence tonight…She said there was a mixup somewhere or another and she thought she had last night off…She has a couple of night audits with Quentin under her belt, but she still had questions tho, honestly, I didn’t always have answers because the checklist Q drew up has a lot of things that do not pertain to graveyards, they are things he does a back-up to Brandon and I long ago forgot how to do them.

I am polite to a fault and can be disgustingly gracious at times…For example, if someone comes to the front desk and says “I hate to bother you…” I will say “Nonsense, I am here to take to take care of you. Please, tell me how I can do that.” If I am feeling British I will say “pray, tell me how to do that.” This is a 5-star, world-class response don’t doubt that…Now that I think about it, it might have been that guy who I helped get new sheets for one his beds after his kid puked all over it…He went out of his way to thank me again, but who knows, it could have been anyone I’ve been nice to…You never know who you make an impression on…

In 1794 – The United States Senate opens its doors to the public for the first time. The doors were opened so the public could witness the debate surrounding whether or not to unseat Pennsylvania Senator Albert Gallatin, who had not yet been a citizen of the US for the nine years required by the new Constitution. For their first five years, the Senate had conducted their affairs in private, with a doorkeeper hired to keep the public, and especially members of the House of Representatives, out.
1990 – Buster Douglas knocks out undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in the tenth round in Tokyo in what is still regarded as one of the greatest upsets in sports history. Douglas had come into the bout ranked 7th in the heavyweight division and a 42-1 underdog and the fight was regarded by most a mere warm-up for a future Tyson bout with Evander Holyfield. Douglas would lose the WBC, WBA and IBF titles in his next fight against Holyfield.
In 1978 – The Bee Gees are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of four weeks with Stayin’ Alive, from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. It was the fifth of nine #1s for the group, the second of three #1 songs for the year and the second of a then record-tying six consecutive #1s. The Bernard Lupe credited with drum work on the song doesn’t exist. It’s a studio name for various members of the production team who added percussion after the regular drummer’s mother died during the recording session.

In 1837 – Richard Johnson becomes the first vice president of the United States to be elected by the United States Senate. In the presidential election of 1836 Martin Van Buren had won a majority in the Electoral College however Johnson, Van Buren’s running mate, had fallen one vote short of a majority. Johnson had no trouble winning the contingent election, defeating Whig Francis Granger 33-16 on the first ballot and this remains the only time the Senate has elected the vice president.
In 1896 – What become the Big Ten Conference is formed in Chicago by representatives of Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Chicago, Purdue, and Northwestern. Officially the Intercollegiate Conference Athletic Association, it was the second collegiate athletic conference in the US. It was commonly known as the Western Conference and became the Big Ten in 1916. Illinois, Minnesota, Purdue, Northwestern and Wisconsin are the only remaining charter members.
In 1975 – Fire by the Ohio Players is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for its only week. Previously, Fire had spent two weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart. Fire was their fourth of eight Top 40 hits and their first of two #1s on the Hot 100, with Love Rollercoaster going to #1 the following year.
