In 1832 – John C Calhoun of South Carolina, a leading proponent of slavery, resigns as vice president of the United States, the first vice president to do so. Calhoun was first elected in 1824 with John Quincy Adams and re-elected in 1828 with Andrew Jackson and had only three months remaining in his term and resigned so he could take one of South Carolina’s seats in the United States Senate. During his term, Calhoun cast 31 tie-breaking votes as president of the United States Senate, a record that still stands.

In 1958 – The Baltimore Colts defeat the New York Giants 23-17 in overtime the NFL championship game at Yankee Stadium. It was the first overtime game in NFL history, ending when Colts running back Alan Ameche scored on a one-yard run and the game is sometimes called the Greatest Game Ever Played. Each member of the Colts received a winning share of $4,718, about $41,500 in today’s dollars. By contrast, the members of the Philadelphia Eagles received $112,000 for winning Super Bowl LII.

In 1974 – Helen Reddy is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with Angie Baby. The song would spend one week at #1 and was written by Alan O’Day, who said it took three months to write and included input from his therapist. It was Reddy’s third and final #1 on the Hot 100, following 1973’s Delta Dawn and 1972’s I Am Woman. Her last Top 40 hit was in 1977.

In 1922 – The word’s first ship specifically built as an aircraft carrier, the Hosho, is commissioned by Japan. Hosho was 552 feet long and 59 feet wide, rather small, even for that era, and it’s size limited Hosho to carrying around 15 airplanes, restricting its effectiveness in combat and after 1937’s Sino-Japanese War it was turned into a training vessel. It was scrapped in 1946, after seeing secondary action in World War II.

In 1981 – Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers has four goals and an assist in a 10-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings. The five points give Gretzky 102 points in the Oilers’ 38th game, the fastest any player has scored 100 points. Gretzky would finish the season with 212 points, a new NHL record that stood until Gretzky had 215 points in 1986.

In 1980 – (Just Like) Starting Over by John Lennon is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of five consecutive weeks. Lennon had died three weeks earlier and the song was the fourth posthumous #1 on the Hot 100 and the first since Jim Croce’s Time in a Bottle in 1973. (Just Like) Starting Over was Lennon’s second #1 song as a solo act and the song also went to #1 in Great Britain, Holland, Canada Australia, Ireland, Spain and Switzerland.

The Diary of a Nobody: It’s Christmas dinner with the Sparrows, as the usual Christmas prime rib is eschewed in favor of ribeye steaks, which Sparrow realizes is not the most radical change in culinary history. Also, he tours some of the remodeled rooms at the hotel and puts the old trash cans to the curb for one last time. new trash service begins the first of the year.

Christmas dinner was marvelous….

The Bottom Ten/NFL Week 18: Hut, hut hike, as the dregs of the NFL continue to battle it out for The Dan Henning Trophy, issued annually to the NFL Bottom Ten champion, This week it’s the Cardinals, Jets and 49ers on the medal stand, but if you think they are the only ones remaining in the hunt for the Bottom Ten title, you are deluding yourself.

6. Jacksonville Jaguars (5-10; defeated Miami 17-7) – Owner Shad Khan threatening to go all “Turkish consulate” on coaching staff as curious win destroys all hopes of first ever B-10 title…With seventh losing season this decade assured, Jaguars might be worst team to never win B-10 title…Next Loss: at Houston

In 1991 – The Soviet Union dissolves, when their highest legislative body, the Supreme Soviet, votes both itself and the Soviet Union out of existence. The end, though formally required, was symbolic. Soviet republics had been declaring their independence for months and the previous day Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev had resigned and the Russian flag had replaced the Soviet flag atop the Kremlin. The Soviet Union had come into existence in 1922.

In 1917 – Harry Cameron of the Toronto Arenas becomes the first defenseman to score four goals in an NHL game as the Arenas – now the Maple Leafs – defeated the Montreal Canadiens  7-5. It was the first game ever between the two teams and just the sixth game in NHL history. The record for Most Goals in a Game by a Defenseman is now 5, held by Ian Turnbull, also of Toronto, who scored five goals on February 2, 1977.

In 1964 – The Beatles are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with I Feel Fine. Written by John Lennon, though credited to his collaboration with Paul McCartney, it was the sixth #1 song of the year for the Beatles, a Billboard pop chart record that still stands. The song spent five weeks at #1 in Great Britain and also went to #1 in Norway, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and Holland.

The Diary of a Nobody: In what must be considered an upset, the renovations at the hotel appear to be done, Jerry plows the driveway at The Shire and Sparrow buys side dishes for Christmas dinner.

Or I could roll the dice and hope Neighbor Jerry does it for us…Long-time readers of this crap know Santa brought Jerry a fancy-pants plow last Christmas and he regularly plows our driveway for us…In fact, he’d already done it twice, once earlier in the season and once a couple of days ago, events I forgot to mention here apologies are issued.

In 1776 – George Washington and his men cross the Delaware River from Pennsylvania to New Jersey a bit north of Trenton in the American Revolution. The river was icy and the crossing was not completed until 3am the morning of the 26th and Washington’s men did not get moving until 4am. Later that morning the Continental Army would launch a surprise attack on German troops fighting for the British, defeating them in what History refers to as the Battle of Trenton.

In 1971 – The Miami Dolphins defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 in two overtimes in the opening round of the AFC playoffs. Garo Yepremium’s 37-yard field goal seven minutes and 40 seconds into the second overtime gave the Dolphins the win, establishing an NFL record for Longest Game that still stands. The Chief’s Ed Podolak had 350 combined rushing, receiving and return yards, a mark which remains an NFL playoff record.

In 1971 – Melanie is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with Brand New Key. It would be Melanie’s only #1 song and her second and final Top 10 hit. Melanie would later say Brand New Key was written in 15 minutes after breaking a period of vegetarianism at a fast food restaurant, noting the aromas brought back memories of roller skating as a youth.
