The long march to today.

In 1972 – Humans arrive on the moon for the last time when Apollo 17 astronauts Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt land following a four-day voyage from Earth. The crew spent three days on the moon and a bit more than 22 hours exploring the lunar surface over the course of three moonwalks. Cernan and Schmitt were the eleventh and twelfth men to walk on the moon and the mission, including command module pilot Ronald Evans, would return to Earth on the 19th.

In 1866 – The first trans-Atlantic yacht race begins with three American yachts getting underway from Sandy Hook, New Jersey, sailing for the Isles of Sicily off the English coast. The race was won by the Henrietta, commanded by Samuel Samuels, in 13 days, 21 hours, 55 minutes. Prior to her racing career, Henrietta had seen service for the Union in the Civil War and with the Revenue Marine Service, now the Coast Guard.

In 1999 – Smooth by Santana featuring Rob Thomas is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the eighth of twelve consecutive weeks. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #3 in Great Britain, was Billboard’s-19th biggest hit of 1999 and its 2nd-biggest of 2000. Smooth remains the only song to appear on two Billboard end-of-decade charts, ranking 41st in the 1990s and 33rd for the Double Aughts and the song also ranked second on Billboard’s 60th Anniversary Hot 100 in 2018. It was the first of two #1s for Santana in a chart career that began in 1969.
