On This Date
The long march to today.

In 1935 – American newspaperman Walter Liggett is shot to death in a gangland-style shooting behind his Minneapolis home. Liggett had returned to his home state after a long career in New York City and was shot while leaving his car in front of his wife and daughter. Despite the shooter being identified by four witnesses as Twin Cities mobster Isadore Blumenfeld, Blumenfeld was acquitted at his trial.

In 1935 – The Heisman Trophy – awarded to college football’s best player and then known as the Downtown Athletic Club Trophy – is awarded for the first time to Jay Berwanger, a halfback for the University of Chicago. The award would become the Heisman Trophy the following year, named after a director of the Downtown Athletic Club. Berwanger was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles but declined to play professional football.

In 1967 – Daydream Believer by the Monkees is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of four consecutive weeks,  the third and final #1 song for the group. The song went to #1 in four other countries including Canada and Ireland, peaked at #5 in Great Britain and because it charted in both the 1967 and 1968 survey periods was Billboard’s 94th biggest song of 1967. In 1980 a version by Anne Murray peaked at #12 on the Hot 100 and at #3 on Billboard’s country chart.
